Default Flathead motor prices from the past

Here is a picture from a 1955 Montgomery Ward catalog, if only we could order up a rebuilt one from there.

But then we would have to pay you 1955 wages!

Can't read the Monkey Wards ad, but here's similar. Surprising how little difference between the 4 and V8.

I bought a 36 engine in 1947 from Sears and it was somewhere in
the $100.00 range. G.M.

Have a repair order for my grandfathers 35 Ford from 1946. He had a reman engine with new clutch and a light switch installed for $124 including labor. I'm sure he would've like a new car but wasn't about to pay "blue sky" to get his name moved up on that waiting list...

J.C. Whitney also sold rebuilt motors that were very cheap compared to nowadays. Trouble is I didn't have any money back then. Working in the hay fields for $8 a day didn't leave much for any thing but survival. Ah, the good ole' days.

Back in 56/7, after I got out of service. A friend and I replaced engines in cars for a gas station down the street. We got 40 dollars for the removal and replacement. At that time most rebuilt engines cost under 150 dollars. We didn't have to get them running, just push then back to the station and he did the rest. At the time I was making about $60 a week, so this was like finding gold. We had to install a new clutch disk as well. Plymoth were the easiest to change.

When I was in college, my '53 F-100 threw a rod near Kankakee IL (I lived in the suburbs of Chicago). We towed it home, and over Christmas break I went downtown to Warshawsky's (JCW), bought a reman crank, one connecting rod and piston, bearings, gasket set, and oil pump. Slapped them in, all was well. Grand total was about $125. That was in '73 or so.

Going down to Warshawsky's was always an adventure, it was right next to a housing project. I was offered mink coats, color TV's, etc. "just down the alley" for bargain prices... yeah, even at that young age I knew better.

When I worked for a Ford dealer in the very early 50's, we installed engines from an "authorized" rebuilder that came with everything but the accessories. The cost of that engine was just over $100, and the labor was about the same, and the whole swap was done in one day "out the door". Gas was 25 cents/gallon in those days.

Remember buying a rebuilt engine for my first car ('47 Merc. Coupe) about 1959 from a company in the SF Bay Area called Anchor Engine Rebuilders. Also remember getting the "quickie" rebuilt transmissions for about $75. In those days $10K annual salary was a lot.
