Re: Flame thrower coil
What is the coil resistance and is it a stock distributor? It all depends on the current flow in the circuit.
Looks like it is a 1.5 ohm coil, so it should work with 6v or 12v with a ballast resistor. Brand:PerTronix Manufacturer's Part Number:40011 Part Type:Ignition Coils Product Line:PerTronix Flame-Thrower Ignition Coils Summit Racing Part Number:PNX-40011 UPC:694342004866 Coil Style:Remote mount Primary Resistance:1.500 ohms Coil Internal Construction:Oil-filled Coil Wire Attachment:Female/Socket Coil Color:Black Maximum Voltage:40,000 V Turns Ratio:115:1 Secondary Resistance:10.60K ohms Inductance:6.40 mH Peak Current:7.2 amps |

Re: Flame thrower coil
This says it come in both 1.5 and 3.0 ohm versions, so be sure you know what you are getting.
PerTronix 40011 Flame-Thrower 40,000 Volt 1.5 ohm Coil 40,000 volts Available chrome plated or black for that stock look For use with inductive ignition systems 1.5 or 3.0 Ohm primary resistance values available While it’s the perfect coil to go with the PerTronix Ignitor breakerless ignition, our 40,000 volt Flame-Thrower canister coil can benefit virtually any distributor type inductive system. Its higher voltage allows largerspark plug gaps for added power, smoother response and better fuel economy. These coils are internally resisted so installation and wiring is drastically simplified. Our oil filled coils offer great heat control for street driven vehicles, while our epoxy filled coils provide superior winding support for high vibration environments in off-road vehicles and boats. I don't think it will output any more voltage than the plugs require under a given set of conditions. Increasing the voltage about what the compoents are designed for will lead to arcing. So I would stick with the stock plug gap. |

Re: Flame thrower coil
Any coil will work on any car. The key is knowing how much voltage is fed to it and the condenser needs to be matched. Igniton systems are simple. You have a coil, points (switch) and condenser. The coil switching on an off creates the spark. The condenser controls arcing at the points. Too big or small of a condenser will cause the points to pit to one side of the other depending on whether the value is too big or small.

Re: Flame thrower coil
Thanks to all that answered I know it is a 1.5 ohm coil and should be 3ohm so do I need a different coil resistor or what my knowledge of electricity is about the same as brain surgery as far as I know distributor is stock again thanks for everyone's input
