uphostery
Installed LB upholstery kit in my forty coupe 5 years back. Installed recently Cartouche upholstery kit in my forty coupe. There is a difference in quality.
The difference is in Thread count. The old age saying, "You get what you pay for", still holds true for today. Besides Cartouche, who makes kits for our old Fords? I have a Model A that will need one before long. Thanks, Jerry |

Re: uphostery
With LB closing its doors, it leaves Cartouche, Classtique, and maybe Bill Hersch as possible sources for the early Ford type fabrics. They may all get their materials from the same source. LB likely kept a lot more in stock from their heyday so their supply may have been from an earlier mill batch. The weaving mills that made the best stuff were mostly in the UK but times have been changing. It would be interesting to know where the best sources are now.

Just from the samples I'd received from Cartouche, I was turned off. It is more than apparent that what they offer is far inferior to what LB sold.

Re: uphostery
The upholsterer in NH that helped LB setup the authorized installer system said that Cartouche bought all LB's patterns when they folded. So much for the competition. Bill Hirsch in NJ has a cross reference of the LB fabrics, which they maybe able to match with something that is available today. Hirsch was not able to match up a LB vinyl fabric I was looking for, and the samples they sent me of s substitute were unsatisfactory, and that's as much as i will say about it. Another authorized installer told me the Johnsons's bought up a lot of LB's fabrics when they closed shop.

Re: uphostery
Glad that the stock old Fords I have are already upholstered with LB kits from long ago. Doing a concourse car just got even more expensive it sounds like.

Re: uphostery
What are people's opinions about Cartouche's cardboard for pickups? After seeing this thread today I looked and was surprised to see that they actually advertise a kit for my pickup and ordered a sample.

Re: uphostery
I put a cardboard kit from Mac's in my '39 p/u. Fit OK. Not perfect but good enough for old Rusty. The roof is sagging. Might be from the glue on insulation under it coming loose or just a poor fit. If I ever re do it I'll probably use one of the ABS kits.

Re: uphostery
Check the material in late a model taurus or sable. It matched up pretty good with stock material.

Re: uphostery
For your mModel A I would use Lee Chatterton upholstery kits. 501-525-8727. There has been some discussion on his kits over on the Model A forum.
