Re: gas mileage
I drive the way Mr Seery does.If I have to worry about Gas Mileage Then I will sell the car. I enjoy reading about Overdrives and Columbia rear ends That cost a couple of Thousand dollars. I have about 2000 miles on my 40 so far this year
I can buy a lot of gas for that money. Not to mention Beer. Also dont mention the mileage on the 1963 Buick Electra i just bought. My Girlfriend loves the air conditioning. I get frostbite on my knuckles from the AC. |

Re: gas mileage
I don't know guy's, but it seems to me that 16 to 18 mpg @ $6.84 per gallon is pretty cheap entertainment. I'm in this hobby for the enjoyment it provides me. I certainly wouldn't be in this hobby if the cost of gasoline was of concern to me. When I contemplate that as a retired guy I no longer have to commute to work on a daily basis, this more than offsets/justifies the cost of the fuel I use enjoying this hobby. I knew going in that this would not be a cheap hobby to pursue....

Re: gas mileage
When we did our mileage test it was done just for fun, not for the cost factor of fuel
While I agree that Overdrives are expensive, there are valid reasons for using one. In my case I wanted a vehicle that would accelerate well and also be highway friendly. Using a 4.11 axle would be spinning the engine at about 3300 vs 2600 in OD. Quite a difference in rpm & noise at 70 mph. |

Re: gas mileage
Interesting reading a Motor Trend road test of the 52 Mercury. They show 17.4 mpg with the overdrive equipped Merc. 15.4 without o.d. and that was measured at 60 mph.
At 45 mph the overdrive equipped car did 21.3 mpg. Non-overdrive car made 18.9. So as usual, speed costs money and overdrive helps.
