Default 6 volt voltmeter

I drive an all stock 1951 Ford Coupe 6 volt positive ground. Recently installed a 6 volt PowerMaster alternator. Works just fine. Now the ammeter shows no charging. Called the tech dept and the individual said don't worry about it! Not a good answer in my book. I'm now trying to locate a 6 volt positive ground voltmeter to mount under the dash. So far only 12 volt meters are located. Looking for any help in locating a 6 volt negative ground volt meter. HELP!

Do you "maybe' have to "polarize" a 6V alternator just like you do a 6V generator???

powermaster instructions say to run the charge wire from the alternator output to the battery or starter relay. Doing this you bypassed the ammeter. You can take that charge wire and run it through the loop on your ammeter to restore its function.

To answer the original question, a couple of years ago, I tried to find a 6 volt voltmeter for my engine test stand. They don't seem to exist. A twelve volt unit will work, but lacks the resolution I would like to see. Since it was for my test stand, I settled for a non-automotive type 0-10V meter that works, but is a little too delicate for in-car use.

There was a 1939 instrument cluster recently listed in the swap meet section that had a voltmeter in it, so they do exist. I don't know how you could package that to be an individual gauge for your application.

If you want to use the original ammeter as a voltmeter, check with Williamson's Instruments (williamsons.com). I think they can take your ammeter, make a voltmeter out of it but still retain the factory look. (Unless you want to retain the stock ammeter.

I run the alternator output wire to the "Batt" terminal on the not used regulator: that way current runs through the system and your dash amp meter will now work.......

If you do it that way wouldn't the wire have to be capable of handling full charge amperage? As example your battery is dead, you get a jump start and your alt/powergen goes into full charge 60+ amps on a long length of wire. Just my thoughts.

An alternator charges the battery in more efficient manner than an old generator. The only time you will start to see deflection is when the alternator or battery can't keep up. Most alternator cars just had the charge warning light so that a person could tell if it wasn't charging. One wire alternators aren't set up to use the warning light.

You can get a digital volt meter on e-bay for about three dollars, I use one on my 40, They work well on my car but once in awhile the act up. So get two or three. Otherwise they are ok. They work on multiple voltages . Get a single use type as the volt and amp digital gauges are crap.
