34 starter cable color
What color should the cable from the solenoid to the starter on a 34 be? Thanks!

Re: 34 starter cable color
The original heavy gauge 6 volt starter / battery cable had rubber insulation with braided or woven cotton covering over the top which was black. It is reproduced today. Regards, Kevin.

Re: 34 starter cable color
As David J asks, what solenoid? Originally, there was one cable (black) from the battery to the starter switch and another from the switch to the starter motor (also black, same material for insulation as Kevin describes, and same bundled wire inside) with no solenoid in between.

Re: 34 starter cable color
In addition to the starter cable, there are a couple cable routing brackets that bolt to the engine/transmission bolts with big rubber grommets in them (at least I believe they used them in 34). They are used to route the cable from the switch on the steering column over to the starter.

Yes, all '32'34 V8 used those brackets with the big grommets except for the RHD versions where the cable is much shorter. |

Re: 34 starter cable color
Just the ticket if you have a '37 or later Ford as they weren't used by Ford prior to the '37 model year. In fact, the one in your photo is the '40 version with an O1A part number prefix.
If you are using one, you'll have to measure to determine how long a cable you will need and then off to the NAPA store to see if they have one of the heavier 6 volt cable variety in the length that you need. |

Re: 34 starter cable color
Perhaps the '34 was converted to a later configuration, only the owner knows.
So any information for the '34, for the most part won't apply..

Push button on the dash and solenoid as pictured on the firewall. Also has a 59 AB engine.

Re: 34 starter cable color
So, to answer your original question: The cable can be any color you prefer as you do not have a stock vehicle.

Re: 34 starter cable color
Would have been too much trouble to state the information you provided in #11 in your original post?

Re: 34 starter cable color
Jeez David, lighten up. I didn’t know solenoids and dash push buttons weren’t stock on a 34. So much sarcasm today.

Re: 34 starter cable color
Tim does have a point . . . we all tend to get up on our "here is perfection" pulpit (just did it myself yesterday) - we need to relax and remember that we've all acquired or sold cars that are a far cry from 'factory original' - and in some cases, they've been improved.
Thanks Tim Craig! |

Re: 34 starter cable color
To clarify my intent….I know some things aren’t exactly as they left the factory. However I try to make things as correct as possible so I don’t have a hodgepodge mess of stuff. Hence, I merely wanted to know what color the cable was SUPPOSED to be in 34. Doesn’t matter to anyone else what’s been changed. A simple answer was “black, red, white or whatever.” Anyway, black sure looks a lot better than the red it was!

Re: 34 starter cable color
The red cable you speak of is more than likely a battery cable.
