Default Muffler Tail Pipe Attachment

Has anyone come up with a different attachment for the tailpipe of an original style muffler ?

I’m worried that the original tailpipe clamp may be too rigid when the frame flexes and cause problems.

Modern tailpipe hangers are flexible, generally with a rubber part to allow some movement.

Thanks - Jim

Brattons and Snyders sell the correct part. Be sure not to over tighten. The tail pipe needs room to expand when hot.

If the muffler/tail pipe are not bent correctly, and a lot are not, the stock clamp will not work as designed. I have an Aries muffler and it fits perfectly. I use their insulated clamp also.

If your not worried about staying original there are plenty of the modern style tail pipe hangers with the rubber isolator that can be adapted for use.
I have one on my AA and it works extremely well.

I have the Aries muffler/tail pipe and the stock clamp and it works well. No leaks and no squeaks. I used a floor jack to support the muffler when installing. I used the exhaust pipe cement as insurance but probably didn't need to. I wiggled the pipe to seat it correctly when tightening the clamp.

Bob, I may be incorrect but I think the sleeve is upside down in your drawing? Small end should fit in pipe not manifold?

The way it is in your drawing the sleeve would just slip down the pipe. Nice drawings tho.

I like to use socket head cap screws in this application:

I like using the No-Nut manifold clamp. Save from trying to get two wrenches in a tight place. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/P...earchByKeyword

Here is a photo of a tail pipe hanger I made for my 30 CCPU. The tail pipe is at the same height as it would be with the original clamp.

Thanks for all the comments.

I have an original style tailpipe clamp, but had to tighten it a couple of days ago to eliminate a major rattle. While the rattle is now gone, I worry about the tailpipe having enough freedom of movement when the car is moving.

Al in NY - I really like your solution.

Thanks to all - Jim

Great looking set-up. No worries with tail pipe rattling against the frame.

To keep the original look, but eliminate the rattle at the tailpipe clamp, you can use one of these "Tail pipe clamp with insulation" sold by Brattons:

That stops the rattle between the clamp and the tailpipe but still allows the tailpipe to freely expand and contract with the heat.

Similar to that "no nut exhaust clamp", but if you are trying to preserve the original look, Early Ford Parts offers a no-bolt exhaust clamp where the "bolt" is attached to the clamp half and thus does not require a wrench to hold the bolts at the rear of the clamp to tighten:

These are especially helpful for use on right-hand-drive (RHD) Model A's where the various linkages, pedals, carburetor, etc, all block easy access to the exhaust clamp bolts.......but they also work well on left-hand-drive Model A's as well.

Hi AL, did you find that you eliminate any engine vibration going through the chassis with this new bracket system??

I am looking at any solutions to decrease vibrations, and i know from modern cars, if you have anything on the engine touching the chassis directly, it will go through the body.. I presume having the exhaust hard mounted like that on the Model A will promote some vibration.

Hi Ruth! I covered myself by indicating there are 2 sizes of sleeve due to variations in exhaust manifold IDs.

Steve: that rubber insulated hanger definitely eliminates any tailpipe vibration from getting to the frame.
