Default Coughs and dies at stop

Engine runs good at a steady speed but wants to cut out at a stop or deceleration . I need to keep the pedal active to avoid this

The float could need to be raised or lowered as gas sloshes at stops. This is most likely your trouble.

Had the same problem which turned out to be the idle adjustment. Unlike modern carbs, the idle mixture needle contols air and not fuel. Turning the needle in actually richens the mixture. My problem went away after a proper idle adjustment with a slightly rich idle mixture.

Air leak into your intake. Two places, manifold to engine and carb flange to manifold.

For those of us with a Marvel Schebler Carburetor the idle mixture screw does control the gas, Not air. Like modern carbs.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

I agree with Jackson111. I had the same problem. Spray carb. cleaner around the manifold to block and carb. to manifold gasket. If engine speeds up that's the problem.

Wonder why this happens while stopping and not while at rest? Yes, unless the carb/intake/block interfaces are really loose...

Good Morning...I often use my hand throttle when coming up to a stop light, particularly if it is a fast stop. I just pull in down a click or two and the engine continues to run. Then I put it back up to the top again...Ernie in Arizona

You should not have to do that with a properly set up carb. Although, the early Zeniths seem to be somewhat more problematic.

The fuel moves forward in the bowl resulting in a slightly lower level of fuel in the jets during the decel, and a little air leak is too much air for the small amount of idle fuel.
Just my opinion.
