1948 - 1952 truck 12 volt wiring harness choices?...

I'm in the process of a 6 volt to 12 volt conversion...My 1950 panel truck original 6 volt wiring harness is trashed...I want a fuse block and NO cotton insulation...I want a NEW 12 volt harness...

***I'm looking to see what 1950-1952 pickup / truck owners are using for 12 volt harnesses?...

***1.Who have you used?...Ron Francis / Painless / EZ wire / ???

***2.Ease of the install?...how many hours / days?

***3.Customer support?...

Mark I did the samething last year on my 50 f1, I bought Speedways economy wiring harness and thought it was awesome! Every 6" the wires are labeled, nice fuse panel and only $150 if I remember right, way cheaper than painless.

I was in So-California Speedshop and looked at their American Wire kit pn 510-303 if I recall correctly. If you want a custom harness rather than a universal fit this one will work and has circuit protection built in.

If you want a universal wire kit try Rebel Wire. American made wire and good tech support although I didn't need it when I put one in my '39 p/u. Easy to do and I'm very happy with it and cheaper than the other universal kits I looked at. JMO.

I bought an original harness from Sacramento Vintage. It is a duplicate of the original. If you are changing it to negative ground you will have to make a couple of changes but no big deal. Also a reducer for the gauges.

I'm with Chuck... great people at Sacramento, Tech support, Ron makes a complete stock harness for 6 or 12 volt. take you about a weekend to install. Good luck

Just a note, 6V wiring is more than sufficient to carry 12V. If you want an original wiring system, don't worry about the conversion. The gauge is heavier for 6V than 12V.

I think I Narrowed it down to 2 companies?...Rebel wire and Ez wire...Prices and options seem to be comparable...SO...I still have a few questions...

***1.Where or how did you mount YOUR 12 volt circuit board?...What are some of your functional or Kool idea / applications?...Please post picts...(ALL FORD MODELS WELCOME)(car , Pickup , Rod or restoration)...Need some ideas...

***And are there any other "12 volt wiring harness companies" I should still consider?... Thanks,Mark

I used original cloth wiring in both my pickup and panel just for ease of installation. More expensive route than the universal fuse block types tho.

I've used both Rebel & Easy Wire. Both were fine for use in my builds. I've mounted the fuse panel on the left kick panel, under a tilt up seat (easy access and really easy to work on), above the center hump under the dash in an antique cigar box (really cool idea from the owner), on a tilt out bracket under the dash. Just remember--you're going to be into it a number of times so make it easy to get to. I've also used Painless & Ron Francis but it's hard to justify the cost of 2x the other brands.

Got my 12 volt harness...looking to "mock" up the FUSE BLOCK in the panel truck...(drivers kick panel) BUT... may have issues with possible speakers...or left side of steering column under the dash...should be out of the way???? any other ideas for mounting and possible location??? Photos of your applications would be GREAT!

Mount it high on the firewall just to the left of the steering column. If your firewall insulator is bad I would say replace it before you wire the truck. In the earlier cars I use the holes on the firewall that mounted the original resistor or circuit breaker. I use a piece of 1/2 inch plywood just a little bigger than the fuse panel. I run screws (usually 1/4X20) through the firewall and into the plywood using nutserts. I also have nutserts on the backside of the plywood to mount the panel to the plywood. I cover the plywood with black vinyl so it blends in with the insulator. If for any reason you need to remove the fuse panel it easily unscrews from the plywood. This method will not interfere with the speakers in the kickpanel

TJ THANKS...I'm just getting back from the garage...that is what I came up with also...I won't need the stock voltage regulator...so I took it off the fire wall...I will use 2 or all 3 regulators mounting holes to mount my 1/2" plywood...I will use the original 1 1/2" wire harness hole...just need a grommet...BUT...the nutserts is a great idea...Thanks for that!!!...I plan on taking some photos...For the next guy...

Marky, I called them nutserts and I should have said T-nuts. The T-nuts have the barbs that dig into the wood. You can get them at most any hardware store.

Got mine from Tyree Harris for my 48 f1. He has a add in the v8 Times. Looks like the original and was easy to install.
