Carb. Spacer w/Vac. Port?
**1937 Ford 78 - V8 85**
I am going to be adding an 1" aluminum spacer with a vacuum port under my Stromberg 97 carburator to facilitate a PCV valve. I also plan to add a 3/8" phenolic heat shield under the spacer that extends forward under the bowl. All total this will raise my carb a minium of 1-3/8" I have a few questions regarding my plan: 1. The spacers available with vac. ports all seem to be "open" Is this OK to use on my stock dual plane intake? 2. Is raising the 97 1-3/8" going to create issues?? 3. There are several height vac. port spacers available for the 97. From 1" all the way to 4". Is there any reason to go higher than the 1" spacer?? Thanks guys! |

Re: Carb. Spacer w/Vac. Port?
I have a homemade open spacer with a port that's less than an inch thick. I suppose the thicker the better up to a point. Four inches might hit the hood with a decent air cleaner. Jack E/NJ

Re: Carb. Spacer w/Vac. Port?
If you read my book you will see the open spacer has a diminishing affect on low to moderate speed power. With a single carb this might not be overwhelming but, for a street car, not the best arrangement.
The height change is more likely to help rather than hinder. |

1. you can find old spacers with the two holes, try to get the thicker one , Iam sure someone here will offer one for sale. I would go one of those over an open one. 2. no there will be no issue or changes. linkage maybe if you go to high. 3. just stick with something around 1" for a stock engine [+ read Johns book]

Re: Carb. Spacer w/Vac. Port?
Thank you Dick!
I am brand spank'in new to the Ford Flathead and Antique Cars in general. I just got my 1937 Ford Deluxe Fordor 78-730D on 10/7/17 and have been having a blast learning about it. It took me a very long time to find this car in this condition at a price that made sense to me. I want to do right by it and NOT screw it up.., so I'm very thankful to be able to have the opportunity to learn from people that have made these rigs their passion! I used to be a bit of a "gearhead" back in the day on 60's & 70's rigs..., but I haven't really turned a wrench in 35 years..., and never on a Flathead! Everyone here at the Ford Barn has been very nice and extremely helpful! I'm really looking forward to the process of preserving my little piece of history! ________Thanks again!!_______ Last edited by ibshane; 11-30-2017 at 07:10 AM. Reason: Splelling error! |
