Re: Cleaning the center bearing.
One night on second shift, myself and another apprentice got the job of
inspecting bearings in two machines returned for overhaul. They were put thru a solvent degreaser and inspected. We finished around midnight and had an hour to kill. I decide to spin up one of the rejected bearings whereupon it slipped from my fingers and threw a few sparks on the concrete, took off,hit a rubber fatigue mat ,flew over a surface grinder and thru a glass block wall then dropped seven floors to the ground. Then my work partner decides to launch one down the 100 ft+ aisle and it hit the metal partition resulting in a really loud bang leaving a nice dent. The supervisor upon hearing the noise enters the aisle as the second bearing approached. It looked like a guided missile changing course when he dodged and went right up his pant leg stopping at his crotch. He started yelling and the lathe operator hollers " what did you expect its a ball bearing". |
