Carb gasket surface
If I have minor pitting on Holley 94 91-99 Chandler groves gasket mating surfaces, can i safety go thru the sandpaper up to a polish to resurface the surfaces? Or will it alter the operation of the carb? I wouldn't be removing to much material but how little is to much?

Re: Carb gasket surface
I wouldn't think you would cause any problems. I routinely sandpaper mating surfaces to be sure they are flat.

Re: Carb gasket surface
I have a 12" x 12" piece of plate glass that I put various grits of emery sheets on, to cleanup and true mating surfaces when I need to. Never had a problem, as there is not much material removed.

Re: Carb gasket surface
This is fine ^, use a small amount of grease on the gaskets and dont overtighten.

Re: Carb gasket surface
Be sure to use some cutting oil or MMO on your abrasive; helps the honing process. Like the glass sheet idea !

Re: Carb gasket surface
And be careful you don't "rock" the part as you slide it back and forth. Very easy to do.

Re: Carb gasket surface
I use a figure 8 pattern, along with making sure to keep it flat......Mark

Re: Carb gasket surface
Also important to not overtighten the airhorn screws.
I use an aircraft in/lb torque screwdriver, set to 7 in lbs, just enough to flatten the lock washers.

Re: Carb gasket surface
Would it be ok to apply a light covering of JB Weld and then sand it smooth?
Also, apply sealer to gasket surface. |

Re: Carb gasket surface
JB weld on carburetors is good for 10,000 miles or 10 minutes, whichever occurs first.

Re: Carb gasket surface
Something I have done that stops the seeping stains and gas smell, is to use the light liqued super glue and let it wick into the gasket edges after assembly. Especially on the jet plugs at the bottom of the bowl.

Re: Carb gasket surface
Vern Tardels book, How to Build a Traditional Ford Hot Rod, on page 112 shows how Vern dresses carb surfaces w/400-grit paper on a sheet of glass. That should be testimony enough.

Re: Carb gasket surface
Thanks for all the input fellas. I went with the glass and wet sand 400 up to 1200. Turned out real nice. Checked with straight edge and used high intensity fiber optic light to shine inside to check for light leaks from the outside. Would have been even better if I would have tested my float before ordering the carb rebuild kit. Figured id be a fool to put it back together without doing so. Did the hot water test, turns out it has a few pin holes.... got a new one on order today.

Re: Carb gasket surface
You can make a jig, mounted in a bench vice, and apply a little heat and pressure. The warped surface will straighten out. Haven't had to do it on Holleys, but have done it on 97 tops.
