Default Tight fuel shut-off? Loosen?

Hey guys, working on a Model A that hasn't been on the road in awhile. The fuel shut off is super tight (need pliers to turn) but it is sealed and leak-free.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to loosen the turning a little without a full rebuild?

Thanks,.
Jim

well generally valves dont get hard to turn by just sitting unless they are getting plugged with impurities/corrosion. How rusty is the gas tank?

If the tank is spotless i would try to add some MMO to the gas to lubricate it. Get the gas as low as possible, remove line from carb, dump in entire bottle of MMO in the gastank and oen and close the valve a few times. See if any gunk /rust is in the bucket you drained it into and repeat if it seems to help. if it doesnt then drain out what MMO you can and refill with gas and hook the carb back up and run it...

Hi Jim,

Laws of Averages ........ gas was leaking ..... just another very typical old Model A type fix.

You may get 75 thousand suggestions, but, mine is to dial 1-800-774-1930, and ask Bratton's for part no. 13170, $36.00; or any other wonderful Model A parts place near you in order to be safe from leaking highly combustible gasoline.

Spray Kroil where you can on the outside. If the tank is empty and you don't have the filter in the top of the valve, then you could even spray Kroil into the valve inlet, and work the handle back and forth.

Best to install the tank valve filter, if you don't already have one.

Use 4 ounces of MMO with each tank of gas.

The tank has some rust forming so I am opting to get that pencil filter and also one for the sediment bowl. I removed the shut-off and will replace with a new one as well. Thanks for the tips!

And the valve plug and its seat may be already galled - so you may not be able to improve the action.

My car had sat for 30 years with some gas in the tank, lines, and carb. Everything was gummed up. After removing the original shutoff valve, I cleaned it with carb cleaner and then used penetrating oil to loosen it up even more. Works great now.

before REPLACING the valve with new repop, I'd try a rebuild kit from a vendor. Snyder has the kit for $2-$3.

One (1) Humble Opinion:

Jim's reply #5 exhibits very rare Model A professional type mechanical wisdom not often witnessed.

A). Do it "once" with the better quality Bratton's valve with a warranty; B). Add a pencil filter to prevent the rusty fuel tank's future "hard", iron rust particles from damaging the "soft" non-ferrous shut-off valve's taper; C). And avoid the wasting of extremely precious valuable Model A restoration time trying to recondition & repair a damaged piece of over-tightened and over stressed piece of metal that could possibly cause enough gasoline fire damage to equal the price of many restored Model A Fords.

Over 40 years ago I disassembled and lubed mine with gas cock grease--- not to be confused with ordinary cock grease, still works smooth and easy without leaks

Per no. 11, to avoid specific lubrication confusion, what was the brand name?

Thanks for all the help, guys! I removed the old shut-off and added a new one with a pencil filter, cleaned the fuel line to the bulb and also added a filter there as well. No more gunk and tank grit going to slow down my driving! For fun, I'll rip into the old fuel shut-off and see what was going on in there.
