Default Rear hub bearing mod

I have just done the second bearing repair mod for my spare 33 rear end.
This fixes the worn bearing area in the hub and on the axle area also.
I machined the hub out to 82.5 mm,then shrunk in a sleave, bored that to 80mm.The hub was easy to machine out after I used a new insert on the boring bar. BUT it is very hard.
machine the axle OD down to 50mm and press on the bearing inner.
The bearings are two roller ones with a total load capacity of 9.6 tons each side.and a limiting speed of 9500rpm ,so should be safe there.
Only draw back of this,I have to remove the brake drum from the hub to machine it as my lathe is not quite big enough to do it with it on.
Lawrie

And ,thanks for fixing the add photo part, Ryan.

Nice work Lawrie, I have done a similar mod but using sealed ball bearings instead of roller bearings and found it to be a fantastic upgrade. I suspect that this mod should lessen the chance of breaking axles as well due to maintaining a more stable hub to housing alignment.

merc , the only drawback with sealed ball bearings is that there is no allowance for the axle to move in and out ,But if there was zero end float it would be OK, the rollers take a lot more load though ,

Excellent job, Lawrie. Would it be possible to give the exact bearing part numbers and the correct description of that type of bearing? Is the inner sleeve part of the bearing? (I mean bought, not made). What is the rough cost of those bearings?

I too had thought about the sealed ball bearing conversions and came to the conclusion that the in and out free play of the axle had not been taken into consideration.

Thanks for posting the pics and the how to description.

Mart.

Good work Lawrie. Looks like a good alternate approach for fixing an existing problem.

Mart, the bearings are NU 1010, the inner is a special , you can use the inner that comes with the bearings ,but need to make another couple of spacers to go in between both the inners and outers.
no drama.

Lawrie, is the normal grease fitting maintained or is it just repack the bearings at klm's intervals ?.

Atta Boy Mate. I love fixes like that. Good thinking. My lathe is a 13" P&W, but I have a friend with a 16" if I need it. Just replaced my 3 jaw chuck with a 90 year old one. Had to make a spindle adapter. Runout is only .002" pretty proud of that. Keep em Runnin
