Default Clutch fork pivot

53 Ranchwagon 3 on the tree. I cleaned up my bellhousing yesterday. The clutch fork is still hanging around. It has the rubber boot riveted to the fork and the four spring clips that engage the bellhousing. However, I don't see any pivot point for the clutch fork. I would assume there should be one. I had tear down pictures of everything, but some nice person broke into my truck, and needed a camera. I hope he doesn't get into an accident. Anyway that was a year ago get over it. Back to the clutch fork pivot. Help??

There should be a ball on a stud that screws into the bellhousing.

A ball is what we would expect, but I don't see any provision for such in this parts break-down from VPelt. Almost looks like it may swivel on some sort of pin. DD

It does look that way, never seen a setup like that. Wonder how many years it was used?

If it's anything like my '51 (and the picture looks very familiar to me), there is an internal tab about 1 1/2" long on the inside of the bell housing that the fork rides on. See the raised groove about halfway on the fork (closer to the "fork" end)? That's what rides on the tab. If you want, I can take a picture of the inside of a '51 bell the next time I go to my shop.

Last edited by tubman; 06-15-2018 at 06:55 PM. Reason: I think I had the size of the tab wrong the first time

It's been many years since I worked a '53, but as I recall, it was just like tubman said. I think there was a wire sort of a clip that held the fork to the pivot bracket.

That would be great. The more I look at mine, the rubber boot that is riveted to the clutch fork has a metal frame around it with four fingers that engage into the bellhousing and hold it in place. I don't know if this would be strong enough to be a pivot point or not. Also, on the clutch fork that is inside the bellhousing, there is a wire clip that holds a bracket in place. Not sure what that is for. More to follow.

Pivot blade/pivot bracket..this is what must be missing on my bellhousing. I just can't picture it. Will have to figure it out before I put everything back together.

Yes, I was describing it as a blade in my head as I was reading it. you see the fork in the image has a sort of ridge across the width of it? That is what rides on the pivot blade. The rubber part is just a dust shield and not a pivot point. The pivot is right angled and rivets to the bellhousing, so should be there.

This expired ebay listing shows a bellhousing and fork and, while you can't see the pivot you can see the rivets holding it in place.

You will have to click on view original listing to see it.

If this shows, you can see the pivot blade.

Thanks to Mart's link, here's a pic of that little "blade-like" pivot thingie. Looks like one of Ford's "better ideas". DD

OK..Thanks a million..I am missing the blade that sticks up. I have the two rivets and the bottom plate, but not the angle blade that sticks up. Now, I wonder if there is a fix for it??

It should be easy to fabricate this part. Maybe someone who has one laying around can give you the measurements.

Yes, probably not a part I can order. Maybe the side that sticks up is the same dimensions as the one with the rivets.

Well, good news sorta. The pivot plate is still on the clutch fork by means of a spring. I guess the rivets broke. I am thinking I can drill out the rivets, and just use bolts, if they clear the transmission.

Hey that is a stroke of luck - you should be able to fix it now. Just make sure the bolts don't foul anything.

Sorry I am late to this thread!

I just put a new clutch fork boot and throw-out bearing (and for that matter a new pp and clutch) on a 1953 Customline.

The little spring clips over the little tab that is shown here.

I have more pictures if you need them.

The boot really does nothing other than keep dust out.

Just an update and thanks for all the info/pictures. I drilled out the rivets. The holes on the backside of the bellhousing are beveled. I purchased bolts with a beveled head and they fit flush with the bellhousing. Also, they will clear the clutch fork on the inside. Just info in case someone runs into the same issue. Thanks again.
