Default Oil Pump Blues

Bought a new oil pump, installed it and thought I was on my way to finally putting my 221 together. Nope. As the photo shows, the pickup lands right in the middle of the baffle on the pan. The original (second picture) seems ok, but I was looking for some insurance with a new pump. Question is, is there a new pump on the market that would replace the old one? All I've found are short bodies like the one I bought. I don't really think the old one needs rebuilt, but I don't want to find out it did the hard way.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

There is some thought that a used original may be better than a new pump!

I'd use the old pump.

If you chose to cut the baffle, leave as much of it intact as possible.

I considered that, but the pickup would sit half in the deep end and half in the shallow end, flat on the bottom. Wasn't sure that would be good for flow.

Chris, I have personally "repaired" low oil pressure issues when the baffle has been completely removed. This shows up especially on long upward climbs and cornering.
There's a reason Ford put the baffle in the pan and it wasn't simply to increase manufacturing cost.
It's pretty easy to figure out where to cut the baffle so that it remains close to each side of the sump.

Not that I'm glad to hear others having oil pump issues...but misery loves company!

I posted recently on Melling/pickup tube location issues. I put the Melling in simply because I did not have time to refurbish the Ford pump. I will use the Ford pump again if I build another motor.

For what it's worth, my 1953 pan (sump, as I understand it is referred to in Great Britain) has no baffles at all.

Yes Im only a few days away from this exact issue. Don't suppose you have any pics of how you finished yours off Kube?

No, sorry, I do not.
While I realize there are folks that have removed the entire baffle and have not noticed any issues, the fact remains I have repaired a number of such modifications wherein the owner did notice …

As you realize, it's a lot of work to remove the pan and "make it right" later on. I suggest you leave as much of the baffle as possible.

Like some others, I'm a believer in using the original pumps

The original pump is back in place, baffle is intact and the new pump is on it's way back.

Once again, thanks for all the input.

I use a pump that looks identical to yours, but has the relief valve on it.
It works great.
I'm not familiar with 21 stud engines, but if there is a relief in the front of the block
and your oil pressure is less than you like, you can make the front relief adjustable to raise the pressure.
Best of luck with your car
