Default 37 and 38-39 Horn Rod Lengths?

Hi,

I have a 37 steering wheel in my 32 roadster and would like to change to a 38-39 wheel instead. Does anyone know what the horn rod lengths are for these years?

I have interest in your 37 Banjo. Others will have to chime in on the respective rod lengths. Thx. Ron

The 1937 horn rod I have is 48.5” long. That dimension is from under the cap to the end of the rod.

Thanks Zeke,

I have a 37 rod now and wonder if the 38-39 rods are the same length.

The 37,38,39 steering shaft lengths are all the same for pass car.The location of the locking collar changed in 1938. IMO what you want to do will interchange.

35 and 36 are also the same length; at one stage I ran a 38 banjo wheel and centre in my 35 column; direct interchange.

i have a 37 banjo in my 32 5w. I am using the 32 steering column and box. I shortened the 37 rod to the right length by modifying where it attaches to the 37 light swtch knob/horn button like it was originally. This way it has a working light switch wih correct for steering wheel horn button/light switch knob.

Do you have more details and pictures showing how you modified the tube?

I found a good thread sometime ago but I don't unfortunately own a lathe.

After carefully measuring a stock 32 light/horn rod from the top of the bottom of the stock button(above the) the steering wheel to the end including the length of the bent over tabs that hold it to the horn button part, I cut off the longer good 37 rod, made the 4 tabs that held the stock rod to the 37 button and then took the left over piece off the 37 horn button, and then attached the 37 button back together with the shortened rod. I did NOT take a good stock 32 horn rod off a button, just made the 37 one match the overall length of the 32 from the button to the switch. I would have to take mine out of the column to get a picture of this where the rod is attached to the button, and with a closed car a little more work then I would like to do! I didn't take pictures when I did this but probably should have.
P.S. I did not change the stock 32 mast jacket. There is a picture of the wheel on the stock 32 column in my album of the 32 5w.

Make ME go look at your albums, will ya? You've really got to hand it to a guy that goes to the effort of making the inside of his brake drums look just as pretty as the paint on the outside of his car's body. A new level of accomplishment that some of us could aspire to.

Hi Deuce,

Nice cars in your albums!

I've attached a picture of a 38 horn button with rod. The part that isn't clear to me "... made the 4 tabs that held the stock rod to the 37 button and then took the left over piece off the 37 horn button, and then attached the 37 button back together with the shortened rod."

Is there a retaining plate with the four tabs that the rod is somehow attached to? Why did you have to make four new tabs?

Thanks!
Glenn

The underside of the 37 horn button I used was quite different then the 38 you pictured. The rod needed 4 short tabs to connect. I have a perfect 38 button and shaft that is exactly like what you show as well as a very nice 38 banjo wheel.

Hey Dick, I like to use Glyptol on all the inside parts that don't get wear so they won't rust! Makes them look good but that is not why I do it.

Dick, I looked at your HUGE BARGAIN posted in the For Sale area. That is going to be a super deal for someone. I just emptied all my "extra" money on the 34 coupe or I would be tempted to drive down your way and get those parts and block. Years ago I sold a French block that had a 1990 date thinking I would never need it. But Hey, maybe I will live to be 300!!
Take care,
Mike

Glenn, I don't remember exactly what the underside of the 37 button looked like but I do remember clearly, the 4 tabs I had to form on the rod were only stuck out about 3/8" at a 90 degree angle. I don't think I used any of the 32 horn button parts.
PM me your email address and I can send you a picture the completed deal.

Hey Mike ..... I knew as well as you that that was likely Glyptol by its color and by where you used it. More than anything, I was just razzle-dazzling the troops that don't realize what a stickler you are for details and utter perfection. If everyone did things the way you do, the world COULD almost be a mo-better place.
