Default Window Regulator Rollers

This is embarrassing; I've done this before but it was 40+ years ago and I can't remember. When inserting the rollers into the channel do you retract the spring so that the rounded edge of the channel sits between the spring and the molded flange on the roller?

Thanks Frank, but I'm talking about the spring around the barrel of the roller with the flat metal ring at the opposite from the clip. I'm thinking that spring has to be retracted when sliding the roller into the channel so that the metal ring winds up on the outside of the channel.

I'm thinking the window track would be sandwiched between the plastic and metal with spring behind it so yes it would be retracted

Hope this is clear enough. I think your rollers are assembled wrong. Spring should be on other side of metal guide. Will get a pic of one of my new ones and send later.

Thanks! I haven't assembled them yet. Any pix of your new ones much appreciated. The consensus here at work is the spring load sandwiches the guide between the molded flange on the end of the roller and the washer on the end of the spring to keep the regulator from rattling. Evidently Ford redesigned the rollers in the 60s and did away with the spring and washers.

You may be able to substitute the later rollers and not have to deal with the spring. Wouldn't hurt to order a couple and compare 'em to the originals. Might work, might not but they're only a couple of bucks each. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Here are a couple of views of the rollers as assembled. All metal one is original from 55 Ford with power windows.

This computer won't let me attach files. Will transfer pics to other computer and try again.

Ben

Well, about to give up. Won't let me attach any files. Just opens a new window and says I am not logged in. Will try again later.

S'OK, I think I have it sussed out. I have power windows, too, and the glass got out of adjustment and started dragging in the vent window channel. I messed around with it some more today and I got it working smoothly by hand. These things have more adjustments than Carter had pills. The proof of the pudding will be when I hook the motor back up. BTW I discovered my rollers are the metal ones also, so I guess I'll save the plastic ones for another project

I would try to use the newer type rollers, there are 2 actually even though most online parts places only offer 1 type.
