Default Brake Rivets

Posted a "Wanted" ad in the Swap Meet area but also looking for advice.

I have NOS Ford brake linings to install on my '38 shoes. I don't know what size rivets to look for and also wondering if anyone has anything good or bad to say about the Setting Tool Mac's offers.

I use size 4/5 on my 40 . Yours probably the same.

I haven't used Mac's tool but one similar from pep boys or such. They get the job done. Do you have good hand- eye coordination? or a friend to give a helping hand?

I used to have a foot operated machine, made for brake and clutch work. As I was using it one day, I remember thinking that it would be real hard to do by hand...

I think that I would take the time to build a jig (wood) that holds the shoe steady, over an anvil (piece of steel) with a button on it to go against the rivet head... Punch sould be flat, but with a point in the center, so it spreads the end of the rivet, not splitting one side...

For my '34 roadster, I had my woven brake linings bonded on by a truck repair shop some 20+ years ago. They were a little grabby at first until I ground just a little off of the leading edges. The car still stops great (mechanicals) and I would do it this way again if need be.
