1942 Ford Convertible
I have never owned a 1942-1948 Ford Convertible. I am hoping that someone out there can help me out. How do you adjust the Convertible top mechanism. At present I have to close the top by hand. As the top closes one of the little arms at the main hinge kicks backwards{toward the rear of the car} and locks up leaving a gap of 2 plus inches on the drivers side top latch. The passenger side closes nicely and a little arm in question is positioned forward. I am really at a loss because I tried to move this hinge up-down-forward and back with the same results. What am I missing? What about the top closure motors? Are they synchronous or asynchronous motors? If not synchronous how are they synchronized? I believe that the two electric motors are synchronized. Is there a wiring schematic available on how to wire the two electric top motors to the top switch? Thank you for any help and have a Safe and Happy New Year.

Re: 1942 Ford Convertible
There was a recent thread on this site that addressed your top motor issue really well. You might go to the search menu at the top and plug in "convertible top motor" and see what comes up.

Re: 1942 Ford Convertible
Thanks but that did not help as the 1942 Ford has 2 electric motors not Hydro-electric motors. However the top frames are the same for 1942-1948. I also looked in the 1941-1948 Service Bulletins no help.

Sorry for the bad information. Does this help? From C & G Auto Parts, http://www.fordsunlimited.com/fords_convertible.html

Re: 1942 Ford Convertible
I had a diagram for the top and adjustment bolts will look for it, I will have to send it to you email because I have not been successful in posting pictures . The top motors have to be in sync or the top will not go up and down in a straight movement. Rick

Re: 1942 Ford Convertible
There is info on that dual elec motor system in the Canadian 1939-48 Ford and Mercury Shop Manual that was reprinted by Crank and Hope. It shows two motors, a control relay and switch as the system. The relay is a Auto Lite HRF-4001. I believe Mercurys had this system also.
