Chrome plating?
Where is a good one? We have one within 50 miles but he charges and arm and a leg to do it.

Re: Chrome plating?
If you want a good one, you'll have to pay an arm and a leg. One of the best ones just burned down last weekend (Advanced Plating in TN).

Re: Chrome plating?
You might add what it is you need plated and what he wants for it. Then we might be able to put it in perspective.
We’re down to just a couple shops who do really high quality chrome here in Seattle. They do industrial and other work, but small parts tend to revolve around the boating and yachting community. You can guess what kind of a sign that hangs on your back. In Seattle you find out real quick if it was properly done or not. |

Re: Chrome plating?
You can thank the EPA for the high cost of plating and there's no guarantee you'll get good work either.

There are no cheap chrome plating shops anywhere in the US as far as I know. It costs the company's a lot of money in fees, etc., to operate. I had a bunch done on a 56 Ford and it cost a LOT. We had a good shop in Norcal for many years, but when the owner passed away, the County would not even let the owners relatives open it. Evidently, they had not followed the EPA's rules. As Kultulz mentioned, Mexico is maybe an alternative, but many unknowns |

Re: Chrome plating?
I have been using Show Quality Metal Finishing in SeaTac WA. I sent a 34 grill shell to New England Chrome Plating. I forgot to budget in a defibrillator to go with the price quote. So, being in the Seattle area certain times of the year I took my stuff to Show Quality. So far, two 34 grill shells, two 34 windshield frames, a 38 Buick steering wheel hub and some other stuff. All good. Don Meth is a car guy and he will talk to you. for instance, why fill and buff out pits in an area that wont show. That kind of thing is $$$$ and he understands that. Check out his website.

Re: Chrome plating?
An arm and a leg is the standard price now. As an example of how much it has gone up, In 1975 I had window moldings, cowl vent, header panel, headlight bar and steering column plated for about 100 dollars. I checked on just window moldings last year and the price was now 600 dollars just for them. Also 600 dollars for the same bumper I once had done for 200 a few years back.
You want the cheapest? Try Bumper Boys but they have a less than stellar reputation.

Re: Chrome plating?
Even a lot of the expensive ones have less than stellar reputations but I recall BB has been like that even in the 80's. I don't understand how they are still in business.

Re: Chrome plating?
Not really caring if it costs a lot but do not want to get taken. Case in point I have a bunch of small victrola parts that needed replating. Local plater quoted me $850. Almost died on the spot at that. So went online to a victrola repair company and they said they had someone who would do them for $500. I may just get a hold of them and see who they use as they came back in perfect condition. How long it will last don't know but then that is the same with the local guy. Anyway thanks for some places to look.

Re: Chrome plating?
You guys are lucky that you at least have an option for chrome platers. The last plater in Alaska went out of business in the late 90's or early 2000's, I don't remember when. No chrome platers anywhere in the state, so even if you send your parts out to the lower 48 states, and you pay the high prices, you still get stuck with out of sight freight costs. powder coating has become pretty popular here now, but still does not take the place of chrome

Re: Chrome plating?
Wow, a guy in Maine knows about a shop maybe 1/2 hr from me that does decent work. I’m surprised none of my car buddies pointed that out. Thanks. I’ve got work to be done and I’ll check this out.

Post a picture of the pieces that you want done. I will get a good quote for you from the guy I now use. He also does excellent SS repair & polish. Great work & (I think) reasonable. (Only 1 arm OR leg) OR, Send me an email or PM: Best Jim |

Re: Chrome plating?
Will do that once I get them all together. Right now there is only one piece, the license plate mount for a SW/SD.

Re: Chrome plating?
Here are quotes I got for some stuff I wanted re-chromed for my '55 in December 2017:
Door handles (without pushbutton); $40.00 each, Taillight housings; $45.00 each, Hood ornament (bird) $75.00, Outside rearview mirror base; $45.00 Bear in mind that the door handles and the mirror base were pretty badly pitted. He had to do some muggy welding on the door handles. He basically threw that in for free. You can't buy repro parts now for those prices and they do excellent work that lasts. St Louis Plating Co. Inc., 2918 Franklin Ave, St Louis, Mo 63106, ph 314-652-0488. Family owned and operated ever since the beginning of time. Nice folks and never done me wrong. |

I can think of a few people that don't deserve to have 2 arms and 2 legs... Tri-City in Tennessee is supposed to be good with bumpers. Do a search on the HAMB board or the '52-59 Ford sub forum. Lots of good leads for good places that do good work. |
