I have seen the "X" before and always thought they were trying to track something or maybe the was an accidental duplication of the number on the engines and the "X" was added to make the number different when they added it to the frame. There should also be another star at the end of the number so you haven't found the complete number. Where on the frame did you find the number. How about a picture as the fonts used are important.

Thanks Russ and burner. Unfortunately that is a photo I posted to show the "X" and not the frame in question.

That engine number would put the engine somewhere in August 1928. Frames were sometimes stamped with engine numbers that were up to three months old.

I think you are asking about the "X".

I have never seen a "X" as part of a frame number.

Can someone tell us exactly where this came from?

X as I recall from an article in one of the national magazines was for a Model A where the factory was doing something experimental. The article I recall concerned a 1930 or 31 3 window coupe restoration.
