Default Ford Mercury at auction

It says Mercury on the glove compartment but thats a Ford grille. This 46 has a 331 hemi under the hood. Kind of an interesting car. See it on yt.

A bit of a mixture here with this Late 1947- 1948 Ford Sedan Coupe.
The Chrome Strips on the side are 1946 Ford while the Tail Lights are 1946-1948 Mercury.
It is a Ford, definitely not a Mercury.

Remember that "RalphG" is in Canada (although the location of the car is not given). I'm no expert, but didn't they have short wheelbase (114") Mercury's in Canada after the war? It's easier (and more common) to swap a front clip than a complete dashboard.

Also, isn't that a "Plodge" shown for an instant in the very beginning of the video? They were unique to Canada.

tubman, what you say could be the answer to this question.
To add weight to what you say, the back window has a chrome insert, which only the Mercury received.
So, this car could have started life as a 1946 Mercury 114 Sedan Coupe.
Another thing, the full length chrome strips on the Mercury 114 models were Ford style.
On this car, all that may have happened was that the Mercury 114 Grille was swapped out for a Ford unit.
All Mercury 114 models got the round parking lights like the later Fords received.
Thanks for pointing out this scenario in your comments.

Thanks for confirming what was really only a SWAG.

I wonder why no one asked what a "Plodge" was?

Maybe like the ferkury pictured, could it be a plymouth with dodge trim or perhaps vice-versa. Either way it sounds better than a domouth.

We got those Canadian "Plodges" in NZ also. We also got Canadian Cheviacs.

When I was in Florida several years ago, I saw an odd-looking mid-sixties Pontiac Bonneville (or equivalent) that had Canadian plates and 409 badges. Checked it out, and yup, they did that.

The story on Canadian postwar cars, I believe, is all about “Made in Canada” regulations. The low price models had factories there, but mid and high price models were not available due to the regulations. That’s why Mercury 114’s were Ford based, so as to have a product made in Canada.

But we did have the regular sized models too. My 52 Merc, built in Windsor, Ontario, is identical to the U.S. built cars.

Location of the auction is Missouri. From what I have read the 114 was a smaller version of the full size 118 Mercury.

Yes we got Pontiac Laurentian's from Canada. They were virtually Canadian Pontiac sheet metal on a smaller Chev chassis with a 283 Chevy engine.

Interestingly all our 61 to 64 Chev Impalas / Belair's which looked the same as the US models form the outside carried a RH drive version of the US 61 Pontiac dash.

I read somewhere the 1949 though 1954 Mercury cars were purchased with body in white from Ford USA so that they could either go Monarch or Mercury with them. Fords and Meteors were a different story though, They were all Canadian. The 1954 Canadian Mercury & Monarch cars had the Y-block but the Ford & Meteor cars still used the flatheads. Another thing I read somewhere was that the 1954 Meteor cars had the 255 V8 instead of the 239.

Top of the line Meteors (Customline) got the Merc engine and dash in 53. As far as I know all of our Mercs and Monarchs were built right here in Canada. With the exception of the convertible and station wagon in 1950.

Newc, your use of the word "various" implies that they may be denied entry at some meets, but I don't think that's what you meant to convey. The scarcity of the 54's with flat motors Stateside is why you don't see them very often at meets, but they are certainly welcome.
