Pan Gasket
I've had my A for 27 years and have never had the oil pan off. I have a minor leak and plan to change the gasket soon. My question - Snyder's sells a paper gasket and a cork gasket, which is best? BTW the engine is in the car.

Re: Pan Gasket
Have you determined where the leak is coming from? Is it the pan gasket or possibly the front or rear crankshaft seal ? If it's the pan gasket I only apply gasket sealer to the block side of the gasket. That way in the future if you have to remove the pan the gasket will stay in place. This would also be a good time to clean the oil pan with the windage tray removed. Be sure all metal gasket contact surfaces are clean and free from oil before applying sealant. I prefer cork gaskets myself.

Re: Pan Gasket
X3,
I also prefer cork, but with gasket sealer on both sides. I use Gasgacinch but Hylomar Blue is also good. Chris W. Last edited by CWPASADENA; 03-07-2021 at 09:47 PM. Reason: TYPO |

Re: Pan Gasket
I used hylomar blue on aircraft components parting surfaces with silk thread. I never used it on cork gaskets to help seal the joining surfaces. Maybe a bit of gasket sealer to hold one side of the gasket in place makes sense, but allow the sealer to dry before putting the surfaces together. Cork gaskets can slide out of place when assembling with wet sealer.

We have not had any comebacks for leaks at the pan.

Re: Pan Gasket
I just did my truck and all I used was High Tack gasket cement just to hold the gasket in place. The gasket is what seals, you don't need all the items on the market. I took the pan off and it was absolutely covered with RTV or the like and was a real mess. Most if not all mechanics will tell you not to put all these things on as that's what the gasket is for but people are sold on all the so called sealers. Just make sure the square gasket over the rear main is in place and cut correctly where it touches the block. The pan goes right in the middle of it and it's hard when the engine is in the car. My pan was put on and they pulled the gasket off the rear main and it leaked like a faucet Just my thoughts

Re: Pan Gasket
When I got my engine from my engine builder, he used no gasket -- just permatex gasket maker. Not just the pan, but several other places as well.
