1928 Sparton Horn cover

Ok Guys...Any horn experts here?



I have a Sparton horn cover. It is #4 (Mid 1928 thru 1931) page 19-3 Revised 2016 in the Standards (no Ford Script).



It has a Patent Plate dated "61928" telling me it is a June 1928 cover and/or horn.



However the "graph" on page 19-2 tells me that this #4 cover started about September 1928 which would put it at "LATE" 1928, not "MID" 1928 as stated above.



If that is the case then, which I do not know, why then a Patent Plate with date "61928"? And yes, it is an "8" and not a "9"!



This is an original plate with original nickel plated split rivets.

I’m not totally clear on what the question is, but the date of the patent of an invention normally precedes the date of manufacture. A company could start manufacturing an invention before a patent is issued but would identify the product as “Patent Pending”:

“ A product or process secures patent pending when a patent application has been filed but is not yet granted. ... A patent pending is a clear demonstration of an inventor's intent to pursue protection of an idea. However, the full scope of protection – or indeed whether a patent will even be issued – is far from certain.”

There is a conflict of date usage between the graph and the drawing.

Drawing states Mid-1928 thru 1931 (May 1928 thru 1931) where the graph states September thru 1931.

So which is correct?

Steve- Does your horn have a flat screen or convex screen? If your horn has a flat screen, then the water really gets muddy. Your June date fits the flat screen horns. Three possibilities come to mind. 1. The guys at the Sparton factory weren't reading their Judging stands when they made this horn in June, 1928. 2. The original Ford script cover was switched out during the last 92 years for the late cover which you have presently. 3. The chart on page 19-2 is off by two months.
Since the drawings on page 19-3 verify your horn as an early version of the non Ford script Sparton horn, the my guess is the the chart on page 19-2 should be revised to take this discrepancy into account. IMHO.

That is my thinking also Mike (#3)...It is off by at least 2 months.

My horn is a convex screen type horn.

My #2 possibility makes no sense. If the cover had been switched out for a later cover, it would have a later date, according to the chart on page 19-2. oops. So yes, #3 is the most likely scenario.
