Transmission internal gear question
This is on the 3 speed light duty.
I’ve got two teeth on the 28 tooth part of the cluster gear partially missing. (not adjacent teeth and the chunks are missing off the rear edge) The cluster gear assembly is constantly engaged to the main gear/input shaft.... how does this kind of damage occur? |

Re: Transmission internal gear question
i would guess something broke and was run thru the gears earlier in its life, then "fixed" to get on the road again

Re: Transmission internal gear question
Wish that was the case. The trans was just put together by the Early Ford Store.
I’ve got the two chunks from the gear. I pulled the trans for a look inside today because I didn’t like some “clicking “ I was hearing . |

Re: Transmission internal gear question
thats too bad. i still say the only way for that to happen is from a broken part someplace else getting run thru those teeth. perhaps a 1st or reverse tooth had a fracture that was ready to let go and the re builder guy did not notice it.

Re: Transmission internal gear question
either the gear was damaged when assembled or something was floating around in there magnetic drain plug may have caught it before it got munched

2nd gear is a constant mesh, also but, in my younger days I broke teeth off of a '39 trans and a 61 Ford Falcon 3 speed.

Re: Transmission internal gear question
Check to see if the cluster was Ford Script....lots of aftermarket trans gears out there.
The main drive gear would certainly show damage too if something got in there. Who knows but I'm thinking aftermarket gear. I know the guys at the Early Ford Store ....they'll make it right. Charlie ny |

Re: Transmission internal gear question
Clutch chatter can also break a tooth.
I forgot about the severe chatter and clutch grabbing on my F1 a few months ago. When I saw a break in the heavy traffic that I wanted to get into I gave it the gas and popped the clutch. It grabbed real hard and immediately heard a clicking in 1st gear. Since it only clicks in 1st I suppose I broke the clu$ter gear. I want to put in an all synchro trans from a later Ford or Chev but can’t find any info on the subject, only bell housings. |

Aaron...I'm gonna assume you're talking about a T5 5-speed, with 5th gear being O/D, and an open drive shaft. You will either love the results, or hate it, depending on whether you carefully consider WHICH gear set (gear ratios) you choose. Myself, as well as JSeery know a little about these wonderful transmissions. I will be willing to help you work through an educated approach at making such a project work for you with a happy, positive result. If you're game, I'd need to know exactly what truck, what engine, rear end and ratio, and the approximate height or outside diameter of your rear tires. I'm game if you are. What say ye? DD |

Re: Transmission internal gear question..... UPDATE Sept 2020
Charlie was right. The Old Ford Store came through on my transmission and fixed the issue. Apparently the cluster gear had some heat-treatment issues which caused the problem.
I've got a spare trans installed right now but will swap it out in the near future. I've researched many threads on here looking for a 10" diaphragm pressure plate & disc setup for the 1 3/8 input trans, but have only found the Perfection Clutch MU73461B setup, which is out of stock / unavailable everywhere. Anyone have any part numbers that work for a diaphragm setup? |

Re: Transmission internal gear question
There is a 10" diaphragm clutch for Y-blocks that will "almost" work, but it's made for cars with the smaller input shaft. I tried it but the fingers rubbed on the center of the release bearing. A shame because it was smooth as silk.
