Default 54 Mercury-box on firewall ID

Can anyone advise what this electrical box is on the firewall of my 54 Mercury.?? Seems like A HEAVY gauge wire running under the dash to the ignition switch I think..

If you have overdrive, is it the OD relay?

I do have an overdrive on the car. Have not tried it yet since I've had the car.

Big wire to the relay to actuate the pull in coil on the solenoid. Then it switches over to a holding coil internally and the load goes down. I dont have a manual where I’m at, but I thought they were fed right off the battery (on my bird via the starter solenoid) and the coil circuit was thru the ignition. ?

Have you driven those overdrives before?

That sure looks like the OD relay box as mentioned above. Fuse tips it off. If it has 4 wire connections, I'd bet on it.
