Default Model A Ford 1928 Generator.

Hello. I'm from Germany and i need help . When I turn the light on, the current drops to such an extent that there is misfiring. Light out, and it is ok. Ammeter on 8, with light on -4. What should I do.

Maybe your battery just has a very low charge on it? If you are going to be pulling more power out of the battery, than you are putting in, it had better be charged well.

Maybe you have a short in your headlights back feeding... Check the pig tails and conduit connections common areas... Try disconnecting each headlight one at a time and retest..
Or other wiring issues

If you have a volt meter, it would be nice to know that the voltage is indeed OK. How fast is the engine running while getting those amp readings? When I still had a generator, I had the third brush set for low current, headlights on, driving down the road at speed, was still showing -10 amps. You would think if there was indeed a short in the lighting circuit, it would show more than -4 amps discharge. Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight and the grounds are good.

A 12 amp draw doesn't sound too high to me depending on what size bulbs you are using. If your high beams are 50cp, it sounds about right to me.

But, the original type headlight connectors are famous for grounding/shorting. So there could very well be a problem there if the bulbs are of lower cp. So, I too would recommend taking a good look at them. I've been known to eliminate those connectors and hard/ through wired them.

I like and use original connectors..............repro connectors aren't so great and sometimes short to each other or to ground. Put on a welding helmet and look at the headlamps to make sure both filaments aren't lighting up at the same time.

New battery does not always mean good battery.

As suggested place a meter on the battery with the car running, turn on the lights and see what the voltage is.

Thanks,Tom. Are you saying that only the one filament should light on the Bright setting?

On high beam both filaments should not be lit ,if they are there is a fault most likely in the socket . High beam has the lower filament lit . Low beam has the upper filament lit

John still in Suffolk County England .
