Engine Chirp is gone
Replaced the head gasket and noise is gone. Here is a picture of the old gasket. I installed this gasket about 14 months, 5000 miles ago.

Original cast iron B head ("C" mark on head) in a B engine.

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
The head was milled flat 14 months ago when I put in that head gasket. I did not mill the block.

an opportunity?
seems like there's a real need for head gaskets with a little more meat between 3-4 and 1-2. with many engines sleeved back to standard it's a pity the gasket makers can't supply one.
is it too expensive to tool up? Last edited by Chris in WNC; 07-13-2010 at 07:44 PM. Reason: clarity |

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
either the head wasnt torqued enough times or the head is warped, double check the head before putting it back on, its extremely important to retourque head after every run till the head nuts quit moving, put a t square on the block and see what you have, and the head can warp in a few thousand miles if its not properly torqued, not looking to argue with you on this but i have seen it happen

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
The head was milled before the gasket was put in 14 months ago. I re-torqued the head about five times until it did not need anymore re-torquing. I checked the head after the gasket failure and it was still flat. The block, however had and still has places that are off by about 0.003". I do not want to resurface the block at this time.

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
ok here is where im going to called an idiot, but if the block is warped and it is in the middle, torque the middle head nuts pretty tight first, then torque the rest as usual, what you want to do is warp the head in the middle first to get it to conform to the block, what you have is a compression leak, gases working there way from one cylinder to another because the gasket isnt holding,(warped head or block) put 5 or 10# more torque on the center bolts

Close up view of gasket
Here is a close up view of the area that failed. Perhaps it might be helpful in figuring out what happened.

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
combustion gas leak from one cylinder to another, warped head, block or not torqued properly enough times or not torqued tight enough, find the reason before putting it back together, if you dont it will happen again, if it were mine i would have the head resurfaced or at least check at the machine shop

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
is that a Felpro or a Best? I blew a Felpro with the white filler in that same spot on a 5.9 Brumfield. The white filler is not too strong. A bit too much spark advance and the pressure blows the center out. The Best gaskets are filled with a black substance that seems to be holding up well. I had one on a decked block with a milled "B" marked head with 6:1 compression and it held up until I needed to pull it for a valve repair 20K later.

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
Hi Bob It is Tom in Napa, you will probably have to replace your head gasket from time to time until you are willing to have your block decked, flat and round are the key to a good running engine. call me if you would like to pro and con this a little.
Thanks Tom F |

Re: Engine Chirp is gone
Bob, might call around and see if you can find a Felpro 7013-R1. Surely someone has a couple of them rat holed. Rod
