Are you sure the starter isn't stuck? What happens when you hit the starter? If nothing happens rock the car back and forth.....also could be the tower, a kind of simple fix.

I don’t believe it’s the starter because it starts right up, the last two times this happened the fork in the shift which there are two forks jumps off of the ring inside the transmission then it gets stuck. Then the car won’t move forward or back. I just fixed it again it’s just kind of a pain in the butt. Do you have to remove the carpet the boots for the shift and emergency brake the steel plate the floorboard the emergency brake bolts and the six bolts that hold the shift down to the transmission wanted to part line everything up put it back together and Bob’s your uncle just wondering if there’s something broken there or what’s going on if anybody knows.

I suspect your tower has some worn parts in it that need attention. The 1\2" ball on the end of the shift lever may be worn square. The slots in in the shifting forks may also be worn.

The attached article may be of some help. Some of the suppliers are now carrying reproduction forks. I would steer clear of them and find some better originals or have yours welded up and milled.

I had trans problems, replaced everything from pilot bearing back to u joint.
Would jump out of gear down hill, could not up shift.Got two old units and replaced bearings but 2nd gear noisy but would stay in gear. Did get new shift tower still n/g.
Looking back the new shift forks are crap. Did replace every thing in shift tower.
Had apart 8 times and ordered Mitchel syncro with 1st and 2nd 15% higer, should of done this first spent close to $3k .

I followed Tom Endy's tower rebuild tutorial and it's all explained well. I Mig welded the ball back into shape as well as rebuilding the rest of the tower and it operates well. Look into his info.

I had this same problem except one of the two shift rods was also shifted forward into the bell housing so removing the tower lid wouldn’t budge.
