engine number location on frame
Where is the easiest place to find the original engine number, if all the paperwork has been lost sand there is no engine number? I know it is supposedly also on the frame, but don't really know where, nor how best to uncover it.
Thanks guys |

Re: engine number location on frame
You need to take off the body or at least lift it up so you can look under it. It is located almost right under the drivers seat on your rig. May be rusty and hard to see but it should be there somewhere.

Re: engine number location on frame
you will find it any where from the front frame bumper horn to just under the body on drivers side, a lot of them are near the steering box on top of frame, scrape real good because some are stamped pretty lite, don't be surprised if the number on frame isn't the same as engine number, the engine might have been swap out at one time or another

Re: engine number location on frame
I was looking at some pictures last night and came across the frame number picture. This one was stamped straight up from the brake rod bracket.
In other words, about 2" forward of the one in zzlegend's picture. |

Re: engine number location on frame
Mine were all like the one pictured in post # 3 , That is the ones that I could actually find a frame number on. Some were just too rusty to find a number. Some frames may have actually been renumbered and this could explain numbers being in odd places.

Re: engine number location on frame
Thanks to all for your help and advice, Dave sent this out for me. I now have an account, what a great site. Boys are back from school for the holiday, Saturday we will look on the frame as the serial number on the motor was ground off at some point. Thanks again.

Re: engine number location on frame
Don't forget to look further back. The one on my June '31 Tudor was aft of the crossmember.

Re: engine number location on frame
For my '31 S/W Town Sedan, it was on the frame below the driver's seat, and looked like this after powder-coating of the frame.

Canadian cars sent to OZ have no chassis numbers.
Do domestic Canadian have them either ? |

Re: engine number location on frame
I've a couple of frames where the number is way, way, back on the driver's frame rail --- all the way to the center crossmember rivets, in fact.

Re: engine number location on frame
Thanks we were able to find it, it was very close (about 2 inches behind) to the engine support cross bar, essentially where ZZ Legends photo showed it. Had to remove the front fender to get access to where I could sand off the paint and rust and expose the numbers. Probably was an easier way but we got there.

Re: engine number location on frame
Glad you found it. I would still like to know Henrys way of thinking of stamping them there instead of just in front of the firewall.

Re: engine number location on frame
Good news CHP came by today, validated the number, glued a new VIN plate on to the inside of the door sill. DMV Monday to update the registration and hopefully good to go. Thanks all for your help.

How do you get the CHP to come to you?
