Default Proto type engine or what?

Just came back from the engine rebuilder, and saw something I have never seen or heard talk about. A engine with no external oil return pipe. The oil return pipe is internal and part of the casting. It also had the crossbar connecting rods. Anybody got any info on these engines and how many might have been made. Jon

This was done for a short time during 1929. Then the oil pipe was used again after that. I do not have the exact time frame, but beleive it is mentioned in the JS. Rod

That could be the case, only the builder says it was a 27 engine, it has a five bearing cam. Wonder why they didn't continue this. Hope to find out more about this type engine.

the non oil pipe engines were built from May thru October, 1928. It was not the entire production, so they are unusual. I know a guy with one who has been looking for the correct valve cover for several years. If anyone has one, he'd be really happy, I'm sure.

This is from my "Engine Guide" on my website:

"ACCORDING TO FORD’S RECORDS OF DAILY PRODUCED ENGINES, THAT WERE ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JULY 9, 1928, (#236,787), AND OCTOBER 2, 1928, (#477,642), A NUMBER OF “SPECIAL EXPERIMENTAL” ENGINES WERE PRODUCED. THE RETURN OIL PIPE ASSEMBLY, A-6645, ALONG WITH THE OIL RETURN PIPE CONECTIONS ON THE BLOCK, A-6015, AND VALVE COVER CHAMBER, A-6520, WERE ALL DELETED. THE ADDITION OF OIL RETURN HOLES WERE DRILLED ON THE FLOOR OF THE VALVE CHAMBER TO ALLOW THE OIL TO DRAIN BACK INTO THE OIL PAN. EACH ENGINE HAD THE REGULAR MODEL A ENGINE NUMBER STAMPING TO INDICATE 1928 PRODUCTION. BETWEEN 1353 AND 1355 ENGINES OF THIS TYPE WERE BUILT. THESE CAN BE SUBSTANUATED BY THE “RELEASE” DATA OF APRIL 23, 1928 FOR EACH SPECIFIC PART AND THOSE FEW WHICH HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED TODAY. ONE ENGINE NUMBER WHICH HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED SO FAR IS #286,625 (JULY 29, 1928). I AM SURE THERE ARE LOTS OF OTHERS".

Now, I wonder if anyone is still running one of these engines? And if there is any reason why it was not continued. Thanks Pluck. Jon
