Default installing my flywheel

while getting ready to install my flywheel on my 59ab I noticed that I had no dowel pins on my crank or flywheel, the two extra holes are there! Is it a must? I don't remember If it had them or not when I tore the engine down. If they were there initially it's possible that the machine shop took them out when they turned the crank? or the machinist took them out of the flywheel when I had it lightened?

I'd wouldn't install the flywheel with out the dowel pins in the crank. Walt

They (dowels) need to be there to locate the flywheel in the proper place. The flywheel MUST be concentric to the crankshaft. Also, recall that the pilot bearing is located at the center of the flywheel. It too MUST be concentric with the input shaft of the transmission.
Most likely the machine shop removed them prior to grinding the crankshaft. They should have reinstalled them.

Don't forget the dowel retainer.
