Default sector bearing or bushing ??

I'm sure this has been discussed before,, so,, I'll ask again.. It appears that most steering boxes [2 tooth] have been converted to a sector bearing.. Is this really better than a properly fitting bushing ?? I'm leaning toward a bushing as it seems to me to be better than a bearing..

That is not a correct assumption. Most are still bushings.
Many believe that the bearings are better, but really that is not necessarily true.
The original sector is too soft for the small contact area of the thin needle bearings. This will allow brinelling (small indents) that will cause them to break. It is likely that some of the repro sectors are done with harder shafts and may be happier with the conversion. Though this is conjecture. My brothers car has been running since 1970 with a needle bearing conversion and Argentine sector and no problems. Though he will eventually convert back to a Ford sector and bushings.

So you can expect mixed results in doing the conversion.

I understand that one steering guy who had stopped doing the needle bearings due to failures.

Here is a link to my comments on doing bushings properly.

I agree with both...gents above.
Getting a close fit between the sector and bearing is what you want and you will most likely obtain a tighter fit with the bushing by honing it to fit.
