Grease for drive shaft transmission area
Putting my Transmission back on my 37 pickup. What grease should I use for the area where the drive shaft and transmission connect? The universal joint area. I am guessing NON -Disk Brake wheel bearing grease is good?
Thanks Tom |

Re: Grease for drive shaft transmission area
A number of 'Barners use John Deere "Corn Head Grease" to lubricate the u-joint and torque tube coupling area. It's a low melting point grease that seems well suited for this application. I found it, in stock, at my local John Deere lawn products dealer. Don't know if it comes in bulk but one grease gun tube is more than enough for one dry u-joint. Hope this helps.

Re: Grease for drive shaft transmission area
There's a bunch of threads on this subject so a search will keep you busy . Haven't heard of any problems with the cornhead grease thing . Ford called for 4 oz of " cylinder oil - soda soap grease " in the u-joint cavity . This stuff is thick but liquid . Closest thing I have found is " 00 " viscosity liquid gear grease . The exception to this is S.A.E. 140 is to be used in all needle bearing type u-joints . This is ford info . I personally use S.A.E. 140 in steering , tranny , u-joint & rear end . The key to using S.A.E. 140 is your driveshaft seal , speedo cap gasket , the two gaskets on the u-joint housings & to a lesser degree the cork-felt in the cap . The cork-felt is really just a sweeper - not a seal . There are many opinions on this subject & most seem to get the job done . Your call .

Re: Grease for drive shaft transmission area
I have finally found a U-joint that is worn out. Most are fine but this one was really lubed with heavy wheel bearing grease. It did not get in the places it needed to go and the joint wore out. I got half a can of grease out of the cavity.
