Default What did i miss

Need to contact party who spoke about using a 17 tooth speedometer drive gear from Brattons and a gear case housing from Mack's with a 3.25 ring and pinion in my 38 Cabriolet. I did and it ate up the fiber gear.

If you are talking about your fiber timing gear. That happens.

I presume he is talking about the driven gear in the turtle, not the timing gear.

I am running a 17 tooth Bratton gear in a turtle from Mac's, which is unmarked, but purported to be the height for an 18 tooth gear. That is supposed to give enough gear engagement to work okay. I filed the mating surface down a bit and put mine together without a gasket to bring the turtle a few thousandths closer to the drive gear. It has been working okay for about 1000 miles. Be sure to use a new shaft for the gear, as any wear might allow the driven gear to move farther from the drive gear

I've posted informantion here on this forum many times about being able to get a 17 tooth speedometer driven gear from Brattons, so maybe I'm the party you are speaking of. The one thing I've always stressed in these posts is, the 17 tooth gear should be assembled in a #18 turtle gear housing, OR in a housing that has been machined to insure proper mesh of the drive and driven gears.

Using an unmaked turtle housing purchased from MAC's is suspect to me as being the probable reason why your gear stripped, most likely due to poor gear mesh.
