Flathead to Aod
I know this has probably been gone over, but could not find it in a search.
I am looking at matching a 53 merc flathead to a aod trans that I got out of a 95 T-bird.. What I am looking for is who makes the adaptor or who makes the best one.. Thanks for any help.. |

Re: Flathead to Aod
I don't know much about this subject but the 95 T-Bird is a 4R70W this is a electronicly controled trans. I think you would want to use a earlier Ford AOD mechanically controled trans. a C4 would would also be one to consider.
Others will chime with more help. here is a link about the trans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_AOD_transmission |

Re: Flathead to Aod
I just put a c4 behind an 8BA with Speedways adapter. I thought it went smooth. If you go with an overdrive it should be the AOD from the 80's. The are stand alone (no computer), but adjusting the throttle cable is very important, they can self destruct. This set-up uses a 302 starter and comes with the right flywheel. Also Flat-o-matic has a nice kit. Good luck, Merry Christmas, Chuck.

Re: Flathead to Aod
C-4's and C-6s are almost a bolt-up and go project. The cast iron Cruise-O-Matic is a bolt up. The cruiseomatic is as bulletproof as a Ford-O-Matic but features low-gear starts. It has a vacuum modulator which only requires the addition of a line from the intake manifold, but uses the same throttle-valve linkage as a Ford-O-Matic. Take a look at that choice. Might get you what you want with far less effort.

As Chuck says about the throttle cable, the gear selector also needs to be adjusted perfectly as well. I found out the expensive way in my F250.

Re: Flathead to Aod
I don't know about Ford-o-matics being "bulletproof". There are a couple down in the weeds behind my barn where I threw them 30 years ago....

The 700R4 - I know it is a GM unit, is an easy install behind the flathead.

Re: Flathead to Aod
Flat-O-Products in Salem, Oregon makes adapters for the flathead to automatic transmissions. I have 2 with C-4 transmissions and they give you all the help you need in doing the job. They also supply all the peripheral parts that you might need. They were an automatic transmission shop that went into manufacturing of adapters. Call Gene Benson for information at; 503-364-2934

Speedway makes one for the AOD,and 3speed c4,
FlatOmatic makes one for the c4 only.I have a 50 mecury engine and the c4 is plenty for it.They are realy not made to lug down. |

Re: Flathead to Aod
For good economy and performance the early AOD is a perfect choice. The setup ic the onlt critical factor, but Lo car makes some throttle linkage that works fine.

Re: Flathead to Aod
Yes I second that Ron . I thought the whole deal for the AOD adapter was for the overdrive that the c-4 or ford a matic etc. does not have. There is adapters for the chevy autos as well.
