Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
I bought a '57 Ford F-100 a few weeks ago....and in the process of replacing glass and runners, etc. There is only service rust inside the door panels and I'd like to spray a protectant inside now that I have everything pulled out. Somebody once said to spray a mixture of kerosene and light oil inside and let it dry out.
Has anyone done that or any other suggestions ? I just don't want to spray undercoating that will dry over time and chip off. Thx....Mike |

I think you'd smell that for a long time before it ever dried out. I used the spray can rust killer, primer, paint and then clear rock guard.

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
On several cars I have owned over the years, when I come across bare metal I do this. If there is no more than surface rust, wipe it off with a cloth, blow out the dust, then lay on a heavy coat of red oxide rattle can primer. Lay cardboard under the door area and spray in there until it runs out. Spray up toward the hinge area, and down along the seam. Lots of paint, it will seep in between panels. After doing this, I never had the paint pop on the outside. For under floor areas, 3M rubberized undercoating is the best.

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
Whatever you do, don't do what I did. I plastic bead blasted inside the doors, vacuumed & cleaned the surfaces with laquer thinner and soft cloth. Then I sprayed dupli-color "Rust-Fix" all along the side and bottom seams, followed by ordinary grey metal primer, then sprayed with the enamel overcoat. After that, I mixed up a big batch of epoxy resin and used it to paint the seam area at the bottom, hoping it would seal it from the elements for good.
Now, that was back in '84 that I done that, but now every door outer skin is rusted out in the corners. However, my car has been driven daily and it is never sheltered from the weather. It might have been okay if it had been garage kept all this time. Sounds like Ole Dons suggestion would be better than what I did. |

I'll be vacuuming out the doors today and decide of my next move. I'm thinking of a light spray of silicone and letting it run down into the corners.
Thx all.... |

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
Worked in a body shop once and boss wouldn't allow anything with silicon in the shop. Was told that one time someone had sprayed silicone in another part of the shop and some of the mist had worked it's way to the paint room. Completely ruined a paint job, it fisheyed everywhere. Silicone is hard to remove if you change your mind later.

This is all I've used for the last 15 years doing restos...you can brush it on, roll it on or spray it on although I don't recommend spraying it cause it will trash a paint gun quick! Don't ask me how I know...chuck is the guy you'll speak to if you call, great guy! He'll send you full instructions with the paint as to application...and whatever you do don't get any in the lip of the can and then put the lid back on cause it will permanently seal the lid to the can! Again don't ask how I know this...

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
Another thing to think about, more than just coating the metal with some kind
of paint or oil. There is a reason Henry put a thick undercoat on the inside of the doors, It was to deaden the sound of the metal when you shut the door, and not give off that tinny-hollow sound. Plus the new rubberized undercoats stick good to clean metal, and give good protection from rust. 3M makes a couple good aerosol rubberized undercoatings. #08883 or #03584 .

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
Thx to all, but it's so cold up here right now in the barn I'm going to wait a bit before I do anything.
Everyday I'm getting parts from LMC Truck. It's like Christmas all over again. If you guys have never used them you should give it a try. They are really good and the parts are good quality. You place an order and you get a receipt that order is placed and normally within one day you get a notice the parts are shipped. Good service so far. Mike |

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
I use good ole Rustoleum. A quick sanding to get the looser stuff off, clean and then paint. Keeps rust at bay.

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
A couple folks mentioned OIL. I see no protection at all with oil. Oil floats on water. There WILL be water in the doors, even if it is just condensation from temperature change. That's why there are weep holes in the bottom.

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
I use POR15 paint. I still have to do inside my doors and such, but wire brush everything down, blow it out, wipe down with thinner and POR15 it.
Get a pint can or even the smaller can goes a long way. Impossible to get off anything like your hands, so be careful with it. The lid on the can probably will not go back on, use up what you open. I used it under my splash pan, under the front bumper and front valence below the hood. |

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
Bobss........I'm thinking of buying a quart of that POR for a couple other areas. Does it dry fast and very hard ? I wanted to buy some black.
As far as my inside doors......I sanded them down and cleaned out the dust and then sprayed Flex Seal on the inside. It's the stuff you see advertised on TV. I sprayed some on a spare piece of metal and let it dry. Once dry I ran water over it and it repelled it really well ! Mike |

Re: Protectant for Inside F-100 Doors
Not sure how fast it dries, fairly quickly at least over night. It looks like brushed on primer and the surface is hard. Use disposable foam or cheap paint brushes and wear gloves.
A quart is a lot, it covers quite well. The excess doesn't store that well, line up all your projects and have fun. |
