39’ Deluxe questions.

Hello. Thanks for having me here . Two months ago I was lucky to purchase a 39’ Deluxe 2DR Sedan. Complete running and driving car.
I have always been a 5-7’ Chev guy. Just completed a full restoration.
So I have a lot to learn around here.

Clamp on door rear view mirrors got to go. Purchased “ Door Hinge Pin Mirrors “.
Older nice paint on car.
So now as how to remove existing 82 y/o upper door hinge pins . Probably never get out with door on car. I have been soaking them with “ Kroil”.
Remove hinges, tape up real good . Then use a press or drill press ?

The Ford door hinge pins are only knurled for the top 1/4" under the cap. I have drilled out that top 1/4" and the pins generally come out- Unless they have worn a 'ledge' at the hinge joints. Look for looseness when wiggling the door up and down. Later pins had an oil grove in them, and the the top of the moving section they had an oil 'notch' filed in them - all to help lubrication regularly. Newc

Drilling from the top is the way to go. There is a tool sold by one of the suppliers that supposedly will press out the pin, but in practice, all it manages to do is bend itself useless.

T/Y guys. Paint is nice . Hinges are tight. No groove.
Have you successfully drilled while still on car ?
Thinking less potential paint damage not removing hinge .

I would stick with the clamp on mirrors if your paint is in good shape. I have had good luck on the lower hinges on my 1937 using the Bob Drake tool, but on the upper hinges it ends up too close to the body and the bolt may damage the paint as you turn it to press the pin out.

Can hardly see anything with hinge pin mirrors. Clamp on mirrors are much better

STOP slowforty is correct.
Since your hinges are tight and the paint is good, you might want to seriously change your mind about installing hinge pin mirrors because you will be opening a can of worms that will probably cause you damage to your hinges, paint and maybe even A-pillar effecting the fit and closing of your door.

I did install one of BOB DRAKE's cowl mirrors and find that if you correctly adjust it it will work fairly well but only on the driver side.

I have 2 40s, and only have hinge mirror on my wagon driver door as I already had the hinges apart during restoration and it is what should be there. I have the clamp on ones on my coupe with a convex one on the passenger side. Makes driving much happier. If your not going for concourse judging, stay with the clamp on mirrors as suggested above.
( I also have a couple of brand X cars, but have 5 early Fords with flatheads) You will find lots of great information here as the guy who literally "wrote the book" on 40 restoration posts here.
I know you have a 39, the mirror info is relevant as the bodies are very similar.

I have the hinge-pin style mirrors on my '35 coupe and would love to swap on a convex mirror on the passenger side. Is there someone that makes just the mirror head that I could swap onto my arms? Thanks.

Round accessory stick on mirrors work well. You may have to search for the correct size

Ok men. The door hinge pins are painted and too nice to mess with.
Took existing clamp on mirrors off, made new rubber gaskets, got new stainless set screws. Now they are adjusted to match, and don’t move around anymore. 👍

Ok next 39’ Deluxe question.
Yesterday we did 150 or so miles. During a section of concrete highway, developed a vibration in RF. Checked it all over this afternoon. Think it’s in RF tire.
What’s the procedure to take a stock 39’ wheel to get balanced. Do some shops have big enough adapters for our wheels without center hub ?

Well guess I have enough merit badges around here to do a “Search “. Looks like while I was playing Chevy guy , I should of got a wheel balance adapter from local legend Dick Spadero.

How old are the tires? You could have a cord/tread separation if they are old.

Nice to know I'm not the only one that's spent money on "tools" like that.
