Door hinge screw removal
I need to replace the lower passenger door hinge on my 28 roadster. I can't seem to be able to remove the screws no matter what I do. Any ideas would be helpful. So far I have WD 40 them with no results. I really don't want to drill them out.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
Grind your bit to fit the slot with flats along the sides, not tapered. WD-40, the normal stuff is not penetrating fluid. Kroll works good too.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
The above are spot on suggestions
Best not to drill. It could leave part of the screw protruding on the back side and not let the hinge come forward to remove. Only solution then is drill bigger! Is the car painted? If not a little torch heat could help Last edited by Oldbluoval; 09-20-2021 at 04:59 PM. |

Good illustration of how important it is to use the correct tool for the job. |

An impact driver works good also.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
I have found that peening the tip of the blade to fit snugly into the bottom of the slot grabs at the base of the slot better so the driver has less of a chance of rolling out of the groove when torqued. Good luck

I am getting it ready for the paint shop. The hinges are the only thing to come off right now..

Re: Door hinge screw removal
try some heat and then touch it with candle wax. A light "rattle" with an impact gun set low might help also. be sure the bit fits tight.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
roger that, we had a big to-do about WD-40 previously. The "WD" stands for water displacement. As I recall today, it was a product that came out of the space program in the 1960s for some purpose therein. Back then it was generally assumed by the public to be some miracle deruster/lubricant, which it was not.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
I had to resort to welding a bolt to the screw head to get enough torque to remove them. Impact driver worked on a couple.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
Sometimes a square shanked screwdriver is nice cause you can lean in on it, while a buddy puts a wrench on it.

Re: Door hinge screw removal
This has worked for me with very crusty door hinge screws . I assume you are not concerned about paint at this time . Heat the screw head very hot but not yet cherry dowse it with cold wter . Use a good quality impact driver and a snug fitting bit . A few hefty bops should free it .

Re: Door hinge screw removal
I agree. I have had excellent results using an impact driver. Get a good one, not a cheapie. And as suggested, get bits that fit.
