AR wheels are definitely different------ they won't fit on a "normal" A hub. Maybe I am not reading your question correctly. What is meant by " normal" 1928?

I have a trailer that is fitted with the AR style wheels and want to fit the 28/29 21 inch wheels to it, It has no brake drums , just the hub.

Two unsafe situations here:

Do not use Model A wheels without Drums installed.

1. Using wheels without drums installed results in the wheels not being supported correctly.

Service bulletins Page 328 explains why this is so.

If you study figure 661 and 662 you will see why.

The Model A wheels depend on the support of the hub and brake drum.

Missing drum weakens the wheel assembly.

2. In Addition:

Service bulletin 328 also covers the warning about mixing AR and B wheels on AR hubs/drums and vise versa.

The wheel studs are also different length as were the AR type lug nuts. The older wheels were a carry over from the last model Ts that had wire wheels. Ford's decision to use the drums to support the outer diameter of the wheel center stamping was not one of their better ideas. Since the inner spokes are attached to that area then it is under constant pressure while on the road. A person could fabricate adapters but any old worn out late type drum will support a late type wheel.

Thanks, the wheels are on a small trailer, they must be OK as the previous owners had towed it 100,000 Miles around Australia, but I was looking for a spare wheel for it and my A has the later 21 in ones.

The bolt pattern on both the 'AR' and 'B' wheels are the same. They will fit on the drums but will not bolt on correctly due to the shape of the drums and the shape of the inner portion of the wheel.

A trailer certainly isn't as much like a car when it comes to cornering with loads inside the car. I guess it depends on how much weight a person totes around in there. Lighter loads might be OK. A person should look for cracks now and then on any model A wheel before going on a long road trip. They are like us since their not getting any younger either.
