Default Not Ford, but Texaco

I have a chance to buy this whole set up and just curious as to what some of you guys think it may be worth.
Also, have any of you ever put anything like this up?
Im curious as to how much concrete I'd have to have in the ground to keep it standing.
This is not the actual one, the one I'm getting is already taken down.
Cant wait to get it up and get a picture of my coupe sitting in front of it!!
Thanks guys

P.S. The sign is 6 feet in diameter and the entire pole height is around 20 feet to the top of the circle

You can always figure out how to put it up but will the town ordinences where you live allow you to put it up.

Great sign, I would buy something like that given the oppertunity. I would say you want to pour the concrete at least 3 feet deep or below the frost line. Measure the diameter of the footing that it is on now. That seems to have worked fine for who knows how long??

Where'bouts in Texas do you live, son? I can't imagine any Texas town forbidding a fellow to put up a sign of "The TEXAS Company", replete with the Lone Star.

Don't forget to "stub-up" through the middle of the concrete for the electrics to run up the inside of the pole for your eventual lighting. DD

Good call!

Also, you may want to build a steel plate that bolts onto the top of the concrete base so that you may then bolt the sign to it, incase you need to take the sign down for repairs ect...you see this all the time on big light poles and signage.

How about then restoring a few old pumps wearing the texico colors and logo's and placing them on an island next to the sign....like an old filling station. Damn, where can I find a sign like that!!

I have the same sign in my garage without the pedestal. It's double sided and very heavy. It had a few boo boos, so I bolted it to the wall, good side out. We couldn't even move the pedestal never mind stand it up. Enjoy your sign!

I have collected these over the years. Luckily we have lots of property so we aren't bugged the township. When I put the first one up I was told you should go 3 to 1 on concrete weight. I guessed my signs where about 300 to 350 lbs, so I poured 12 bags of 80lb ready mix. They been standing for the last twenty years so, so far, so good.

I really love that sign. My first job aside from hauling hay was at a Texaco. If I had the real estate, something like that would be in my yard near the garage. The gas station was the hangout and the social center of many small towns and cities. If the owner was cool, it also gave us a place to work on our cars, meet dates whose fathers hated us.

I need that one and a Skelly and I would be set.

talk to a good concrete man....size of the hole depends on weight of sign, post, etc., as others have said....rebar cage in the hole.....j-bolts with diameter that will fit the holes in the base....etc....etc...would hate to go less than what you need and have your pole with sign come down....good luck and congrats on your buy.....Mike

As Mike in AZ says, lots of substantial rebar and the largest diameter and longest j-bolts your situation will allow. Don't forget the horizontal "wind loads" on something like that, the same way light poles are rated. DD

Hey Coopman, I see that you and Kube (your kissin' Cousin) have both changed your signatures, in what appears to be (if I’m not mistaken) an infantile attempt at a cheap shot. How flattering to me... I guess my fan club has increased by 50%. Here are a couple of quotes for you to ponder... "What really flatters a man is that you think him worth flattering", George Bernard Shaw. and "A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle", Ben Franklin. Here's another one that someone I worked with years ago used to say, "Every Knock is a Boost", so thanks for the lift, my frail ego can use it... LOL Vic

I would check with a local sign company if none local spend a dime or should I say dollar. I just put a dinky 2"x2"x3' gate post up & the ready mix & gate mfg said dig a hole1/3rd to 1/2 length of the post & at least 6" or better in dia. Wind is really gonna like that sail so go deep & big. I'm bettin a truck load of concrete or more. Twenty feet high is gettin up there. Like what was mentioned set it on a steel base so you can level it & do repairs.
Beautiful sign by the way.

Thanks for all of the replies. I did get it, and it is home safe in the barn for now.
I do plan on lighting it as all of the original conduit is still there. I need to find 2 old green lights if anyone knows where there are any .
I will get with a sign company and figure out the concrete. I definately dont want to see it on the ground after it's put up!!
My plan is to blast and powder coat the stand. I think that would be the best way to protect it from the elements.
Thanks for the responses, and thanks to my wife for letting me get it!!

They are not old or vintage but I think I seen some in Lowes. You might give google a try for some.

not sure about steel base, but what kind of base does your sign pole have??....when i put up light poles....street lights, etc. with 1/2" or so plate on base of pole...just used plywood template with nuts below and above the template to keep the j-bolts in place and correct to base of pole...and used those nuts for adjustment for level....or square....or straight...lol.....good luck....Mike

Congrats on the great find! I've got the sign, but not the "banjo" pole ( I couldn't put it up in my subdivision, anyway). Here's mine peeking out from behind a row of pinball machines in the garage.
