Post Q: 34 Ford 3W which REAR window regulator

I need some help on the REAR WINDOW REGULATOR and glass channel of a 34 Ford 3W Coupe. The rear window regulator is fitted to a wooden panel in the back of the car. I would like to know if that regulator is the same one as either the LHS or RHS front door one. Or is it a completely different one and what would it look like.
The same for the rear glass chanel, is it the same one that is used on the front doors?
Any help or information is much appreciated!
Thanks guys

Not even close to being the same, neither the regulator nor the glass channel. They're common with those components in a five-window coupe, but that's it. The rear window regulator has but a single arm and the channel matches that accordingly, whereas the door regulators have two arms with two connections on the glass channel. A '34 coupe door window regulator is about three times the size of that used for the rear window.

The disparity is even more pronounced with the '34 door components with their roll-back vent feature.

They are more than a challenge and a half to find, restore and then to get them to work properly. Being a single arm regulator and couple that with such a wide window I,m not sure they worked to efficiently back in the day. DavidG might want to comment. We ended up installing a Toyota double arm regulator in its place Aa Good

Dave,

A challenge, yes, but in terms of operation, it's no different than the door windows on '32-'34 pickups and panel deliveries and the quarter windows of '32 Tudor sedans, all of which have single arm regulators. I think that having the absolutely correct side-to-side width of the glass with polished edges is essential for them to operate smoothly.

You might look at a Model A regulator, they look pretty similar. Some modifications may be required on the arm. Example, a Model A coupe passenger door regulator. Isn’t there a fellow, Regulator Roy who could help you out?

If you want to replicate one start with a 1932-34 pickup regulator, it has the correct end stud with spring loaded washer (Model A coupe/tudor has a different end using a slider) and the handle mount drilled for the center set screw. You would need to adjust the length of the arm.

On our fiberglass 1932 3 window coupes ordered with manual back window we use a 1932 door regulator and 5 window bottom channel. This set up works very smooth, HOWEVER it does change the location of the handle from original. You will also have to drill and tap the center of the handle mount for the set screw.

I used a Model A coupe rear-window regulator. The crank shaft is tapped,
but you will need to shorten the shaft about 1/4 inch and the same on the
handle machine screw. I suspect there are other differences but I didn't
have an original to compare. David is correct, with the window being so wide
and short it will easily bind if the glass is not cut and sanded correctly.

...thank you Terry for the pics of the regulator and correct set up. I am so relieved that i have the original part.
However, the comments and suggestions on how to improvise and look for alternatives is a great help, especially if the regulator is missing or broken.
Thanks a lot, now its to find the correct dimensions and thickness of the rear glass. My one is definately aftermarket and cut so badly and so irregular its just horrible to look at. Thats probably why the window closed and opened so badly too, like pointed out: if the glass does not fit properly to the channel and does not have the correct dimensions, it will work a lot worse, if at all!
I wonder if i should have it cut locally with a glass manufacturer or find a good reproduction or original rear window glass with correct dimensions!
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Many regards!!

Sorry, the window regulator from S Africa is not the part I have shown. Note how the proper regulator has a long arm riveted to the face of the large gear and mounts with four screws to the wood. Use a piece of Masonite board to fit the glass opening then use the Masonite as a template for the glass cutter.

Terry, youre right, my arm is a lot shorter, the design of the mounting plate is different as well - the devil lies in the detail ... damn, its the wrong one, no wonder that rear window did not wind and move properly. Someone did mess with it before. Back to square one!
Is yours a reproduction part, looks like new??
I did not find a reproduction part that looks exact like yours, except for this one:

Unless you insist on one exactly like the original (part number 40-72400, which has not been reproduced) you can make the one in your photo in #14 work fine by shortening or lengthening the arm as required and have the regulator end up in the same location as original retained with three screws instead of the original four screws. One similar reproduction from United Pacific is for the doors of 1932-34 pickups and panel deliveries, but be sure and go for the right door version for the correct orientation of the arm and regulator on the upright back panel of wood in your coupe.

Thanks, Terry. I was unaware that anyone had reproduced the four-screw version.
