Default Shift "Throws" in my '53

I am working on a '53 Victoria, getting it into condition for comfortable driving/cruising. The transmission shifts o.k. but the distance (throws, I believe is the term ) between 1st and 2nd and between 2nd and 3rd seem too long. Is this adjustable ? I would like a tighter feel. thanks.

Check and see if your shift linkage has excessive play. It may need adjustment and /or new bushings or grommets.

Yes...Ford linkage is usually quite good as column shift goes. Look at the linkage as someone else moves it.
Fixing slop is usually simple...replace the bushings at each end of the two rods, then put shifter in neutral and trans in neutral, meaning the two trans levers are in the middle of their 3 positions. Then you adjust lengths of the rods so they slide right on without moving any levers.

The arms on the column end of the shifter would have to be lengthened, or the arms on the transmission shortened to make any difference in the throw. All of this would be trial and error. As said above, check the bushings or grommets for slack and repair if necessary.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see what I can determine about the bushings/groumets. The linkage is standard. The mileage of the car exceeds 100K. That may explain the looseness. Richard
