Default Arabian Sand Color

Hello,
I am rebuilding a 1928 Model A Roadster AR here in Auckland New Zealand. I am hoping someone can help me with identifying some colors I like. I have a copy of Restoring the Open "A"s by Mack Hils which lists Arabian Sand Light and Dark as colors for the 1928 cars. On pages 35 and 39 Mack shows a 1929 Roadster in a color which I like. Can anyone advise what color that is? It would be great if it was one of the Arabian Sand shades. Also if anyone had a picture of a car in either shade they could post that would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping you can help me.

This might get you close remembering that the color might change depending on the scanner used to scan the chips and the monitor you use on your computer.

I am attaching two pictures of when I was painting my 28 special coupe. The pictures aren't great, but maybe you can get an idea of what Arabian Sand Dark (ASD) looks like. I used PPG Concept. Beware if you use ASD, with the trim color Cobra Drab. PPG Copra Drab formula is WRONG! I found out the hard way. Only closed cars in 1928 had Arabian Sand Dark as a color, not ASL. Open cars had either one to chose from for some reason. I might be able to take a better picture if you need it. I still haven't installed the body on the frame and got it running. ASD is very close to Rose Beige used one 29 cars.

Gavin,
This car is also on the front cover of July/August 1993 Restorer magazine. The magazine will likely provide a more accurate color than an email of a photo as in the thumbnail above.

I believe Senor Sheen is asking, not demanding, since English is not his native tongue.

I wish we could have a thread of good pictures of A's with all the color combinations for these years.

(there is a National Tour taking place that could provide many!)

And surely there are enough members here that we could have a fine color collection.

The one that will be coming home with us isn't photo worthy as it was painted Washington blue on a '28. But will be making color choice down the road.

Pictures should list body color, reveal color, molding color, and pin stripe if any.

For us new to A's.

Thanks,

Sean

My 28 Tudor was painted in 1985 Arabian Sand & Copra Drab. No light, Medium or Dark just Arabian sand.

This is it on my Avatar.

That link is no longer active. Any links to other samples of these two shades that you know of?

Here is one that is Arabian Sand. Nice to see another early NZ roadster being restored. Does it have the original engine? What is the body number?

Cheers Bick.

I met a man at a car show once that had a Model-A, and he said he painted his car outside. His car was white, and it looked decent.

Most paint suppliers can match the color of your vehicle if you provide something that is the color you need to match for the paint computer to do its job. It might be hard to bring a door of other large item for them to color match. The beauty of this is they can match slightly faded paint. Body shops do this all the time.

I have found that those computer matching gizmos are pretty good on light colours but terrible with darker ones. To avoid having to rely on them, I keep the formula they stick on the outside of the tin and the first thing I paint is the lid. I have had to use that a time or two as a sample to match while the car stays in my garage.
