This video does a better job than what you will find in a book.
Firing order is 1,5,4,8,6,3,7,2

So true.
My 1981 copy of Ron Bishop's book titled: REBUILDING THE FAMOUS FORD FLATHEAD has a firing order misprint on page 69. It shows the firing order of the 1946-53 Ford flathead to be 1,5,8,4,6,3,7,2.

I wonder how many folks have been misled by that misprint.

The Van Pelt site shows shows correct firing order if you visually orient the pictorial drawing of the distributor correctly with the pictorial of the engine. Number 1 plug is at 6 o,clock on the cap and #6 is at 12 o,clock -180 degrees opposite #1 as shown below.

You can trace #1 plug wire in this photo. This is a Mallory dual point with mechanical advance. Same firing order as OEM unit.

red flag where it says 1946 - 1953 should be 1948 trucks to 1953 and cars 1949 to 1953 & 1954 in Canada

If your going to have an old car, it's best to have a old motors Manual of the era. Any posted in the 40's will have most caars made in the 30s up. The manuals have everything in them from engines to windows regulators. Worth the investment. And yes gauges as well.

Glick70: Please post the links to the two VanPelt distributor firing order sites that you mentioned above. I can only find one and am curious as to the "opposite of each other!" proclamation. Thanks, JIM

I've got the 1949-52 factory F-series truck manual and it has a picture, not a drawing, of the engine and distributor and #1 is at the bottom.

BOTH are Correct! As long as #1 is where the rotor is pointing, With #1 piston at TDC on compression stroke. AND you connect the others in the correct firing order (clockwise).
Use either.
