Default Grease Fitting Will Not Take Grease

I’m greasing the chassis today, and the fitting on the interior side of the front brake backplate (by the king pin) will not take grease. This is a surprise because I grease the chassis every 1000 miles, which turns out to be about 3 times a year, and all of the fittings took grease fine last time.

I used a toothpick to make sure there isn’t any debris in the fitting, and I’ve tried a little bit of torch heat with no luck. I don’t want to get carried away with the torch and mess up the hardening of the metal.

Can anyone offer me some ideas for how to proceed?

I assume you have the front end lifted off the ground. If not, you are fighting the weight of the car to force grease in there. Another possibility is that the bush has turned in the stub axle, causing the holes to no longer line up. Disassembly is the only cure if that is so and that might be good idea anyway to make sure all is well.

Yes, the wheels are off the car.

I’ve never had a king pin out of a car. I didn’t know there was a grease hole in the bushing, but I guess that would make sense. I didn’t know the bushing could twist either.

Like most things on these cars, king pins are not difficult to work on. If you have either Les Andrews' or Les Pearson's book, there are simple to follow directions. (I prefer Pearson's book)

Found it. Wow. My Model A grease fitting adapter was plugged. I had a second adapter, and the grease fitting takes grease just fine with it. I never had that happen before.

I ruptured the grease gun hose trying to get what turned out to be a bad adapter to work, but the grease gun is 30+ years old. So, it’s time for a new hose anyway. I had a new spare.

Suggest that you get a longer hose, makes greasing easier.

If you remove the fitting will it take grease?? If no, replace the fitting.

Interesting tool. I never knew about it. Google found this link when I searched for KD tool #416.

That sounds like a good idea. How long is the hose that you use?

Thanks. I think my old hose was 18”, and my new one is 12”. As I was pumping the fittings with the 12” hose, I was thinking this was harder than I remembered. The longer hose will probably fix that.
