Um, the UPS "nerds" got it right. It takes up as much room on their truck as if it were solid. UPS figures weight and size.
Did you think they were going to place small boxes within the opening?

Several years ago I shipped a stock 32 wishbone from Nebraska to Florida. I found a nice pallet just the right size, strapped the wishbone down and delivered it to my local Fastenal store. 4 days later it reached the destination safely.

This bad boy sounds like a perfect candidate for a trip in the belly of a Greyhound bus.

Another option is to not box it and wrap it in heavy craft paper and take a trip to your local US Post Office and see what they say.

I shipped an front axle that way and they were the cheapest shipping quote I got. Not sure why they like it that way, but the counter lady said it was better than putting it in a box. Go figure.

Tim

Unfortunately ALL motor freight companies consider the space it takes as a "single" piece. That factors into the price MORE than weight.....regardless of whether other freight can get stacked on top of it OR it can be stacked on top of something. Given today's fuel cost AND the fact that "many" shipping companies are operating above capacity AND not being able to fill needed work positions.....Freight is stupid expensive. ALSO be prepared for "ADDED" fee's...I shipped a rear end for someone here on the Barn from Louisiana to So Cal using my fright companies I deal with on a daily basis, got a freight quote and ALL before shipping and STILL got hit with "added" fee's SO a $350 fright bill turned into almost $600 by the time it arrived at the freight forwarder in So Cal. I will say It didn't help that the weight was whoa-fully under estimated and that accounted for close to half of the near $200 extra BUT I still felt very bad for the person as I feel like I baited and switched him!!!! WHY I'm not keen to offer to help anymore!!!!

Fastanal is great when it works. At present they are not shipping over the rockies.

I quit using them when they made having an account mandatory. I can go to an LTL truck freight outfit and they don't require an account. I get hardware from McMaster Carr for the most part anyway.

It's unfortunate that rising fuel prices are making shipping of any type expensive no matter who does it. I cardboard box things that won't get hurt in shipping and wood crate things that will. Packing materials commensurate with the level of fragility.

I've had folks ship me rear axles with the damn torque tube still on them. The crate they tried to make fell apart in shipment but the axle got here. I can control what I do but you can't control others. They do things with no common sense some times but there's nothing that can be done about that.

One thing I would do, no matter how you ship it, is to add something between the spring purchase bung's to stabilize the triangle. One bend and the wishbone becomes an insurance claim. A few months ago I received a round 2"x 36'' blueprint mailing tube that was bent in half, thankfully the prints were not damaged.

I have shipped a wishbone via Greyhound. It was not very expensive, but that was a few years ago.
