Car Parts Store Replacement Part for Rear Wheel Grease Seal

I’d like to repack my rear wheel bearings this weekend, but I forgot to order replacement grease seals from my Model A parts vendor. Does anyone know of a replacement part number that I could use at Advance Auto, AutoZone, NAPA, etc. to find a suitable replacement part?

If you're just repacking the rear wheel bearings and the seals are not leaking, why not re-use them?

The last time I repacked the rear wheel bearings, I tore up the grease seals getting them out. So, I replaced them. I wouldn’t be surprised if I tear them up again.

You can grease without removing the drum. Your car has grease fittings on the ends of the axle housings to grease the rear hub bearings, just don't overdo. To remove the seal without damage drop the drum squarely on a piece of plywood and the bearing will push the seal out. remember to remove the snap ring.

I would sure like to see a demonstration of dropping the hub on a plywood piece to have the bearing push the seal out. The seals I have taken out are way to tight for a bit of inertia and the weight of a bearing to push out. I have destroyed any rear wheel seal I have had to remove.

The last time I removed the grease seals for repacking, I started by dropping the wheel on concrete to let inertia to force the bearing out, and it marked up my garage floor with drop marks. So, I ended up digging seals out, which rendered them non re-usable.

I know there are grease fittings on the back of the plate, but I’ve never noticed fresh grease around the bearings.

The last time I removed those seals they looked like figure 8's. They were TIGHT!

Yeah, mine were really tight. I was slamming that wheel on the concert with all my might, and they were not coming out.

Some parts never budge no matter how much begging and using colorfull words. then you need to destroy to re-new, Electrolosis and rust makes for stubborn parts. While the drums are off try pumping some grease in the rear hub zerks and see what happens.

If the seals in the axle housing are bad the grease will go toward the ring gear instead of the Axle bearing.

The grease will take the path of least resistance. A good restoration will have the seals working as they should.

If the seals in the axle housing are bad the grease will go toward the ring gear instead of the Axle bearing.

The grease fittings at the end of axle housings are so useless, that Ford removed them in 1931.

So if you want to grease the hub bearings just remove the hub and drum and pack more grease in you can do that with the seals in. Just take two fingers and pick more grease into the bearings with the hub seals in. There is no need to remove the seals to add grease to them.

Please all… Do NOT drop your drums. That is crazy . Steel drums could bend, cast iron drums break, and the seals unless super loose won’t come out anyway. TRue the rear axle fitting is pretty useless. Just add as describes above. Make sure your retorque axle to 100-150 lb ft pounds. Keys should be good and fit snugly . If not you have an axle fix and replacement job to do.

Larry you are right about adding grease, but when I said drop the drum I did state to do it squarely and on a piece of plywood. Doing it that way won't bend or break anything. All the rear hub seals I have removed came out ok this way. Yes some may have rusted or canted seals that won't budge, but it is worth a try.

So, no one has come up with an alternative for those seals. Maybe you'll just have to delay doing the job till you can order the correct seals. BTW, I agree with those who say you can't remove them without destroying them. I have a tray on the shelf with all sorts of bits and pieces for different major components. For the rear end tray, I always have a pair of seals and as soon as I use them, I replace them. As soon as they come out of the tray, I write them on a clip board I hang on the wall.
I do not just add grease to the bearing without taking it apart, cleaning and inspecting it. I have yet to see an original hub that I would use again. They wear through the hardening at the axle nut end. Once they are at that point, you are in danger of breaking an axle. Think about it.

I would assume that your rear bearings don't have many miles on them since the last time you greased them, they were new. Take Larry's advice and clean the bearings and repack them.

I found the local seals quite a bit more then from the dealers.
Kind of strange, as the local throw out bearings were cheaper.

The new rear grease seals came in a few days ago, and I planned to repack the rear wheel bearings yesterday. However, I could not get the grease seal retainers out of either drum. (The last time I repacked the rear wheel bearings, I noticed that the grease seal retainers were weak; so, I replaced them with new ones. Now, I cannot get the “new,” stronger grease seal retainers out of the drums.)

I ran out of time; so, I just added grease this time around. However, I’d like to remove and repack the bearings next time around.

How can I get the stubborn grease seal retainers out of the drums?
