Default High RPM problem, thoughts?

Good afternoon everyone…First, I hope you are all doing well.

What do you think I’m dealing with here? I could use your KSA’s. First time Mercury owner. Initially, while driving my car, it just shut off on me while stopped at a light and since then would not start. This was after driving around for about 5 hours and I initially thought I ran out of gas (fuel gauge works). Put two gallon of fuel in and has not started since this occurrence. I have since then removed one of the carbs which didn’t appear to be getting any fuel. I’ve cleaned it and installed it back on with new rubber fuel hoses, running two carbs, and now he wants to fire up immediately, however, he is immediately at high RPM’s and I shut him down. Immediately I have noticed fuel is dripping from the power valve screws. I have since then removed the carb and waiting for a new one to get delivered. What are your thoughts if any? Thank you kindly in advance. Stay safe, blessed, and be well.

Respectfully,

1950 Mercury

Hmmm, that's odd. 97's seldom have power valve problems; they are much more common with 94's. You know what they say about ASSUME.

Anyway, I think you are making the right move.

Regardless, having a spare carb is a good idea. You made the right decision to get a new one. Now you can take your time to explore and find a fix for the bad one.
Good luck,
Phil

Good evening…Thank you Tubman and 47topless. I think that’s going to be my plan. I’ll take my time with the current ones. When I purchase the car, it had the two 97 carbs that appear to be repops. I appreciate the assistance. Thank you.

Re-pop carbs are usually a big problem. Try to find out what you have before you do much else. You probably need new carburetors.

Good evening…Tubman thank you for the advice. I will definitely slow it down until I have a better idea.

Pete…Thank you. I appreciate you chiming in. Not sure where you are getting your information and unfortunately you are off base. I’m sure the gentleman you mentioned is very knowledgeable, the reason I came here with my question and “guidance”. Not one second did I discount this. Here nor there, thanks again. Have a safe, blessed, and well night.

Good morning…Update…the new carb arrived and flathead fired right up. No leaks, issues observed at this time. Just need to tune up a tad. I just order a couple carb rebuild kits and will start rebuilding the older ones soon. Thank you all so kindly for the assistance. I’m grateful for your KSA’s. Stay safe, blessed, and be well.

Curious as to what you called "re pops" . . . are they the ones from Speedway, or are they the ones that Clive makes from England? (These are the ones you'd want).

Good morning…From the looks of them and research they appear to be speedway ones and not England. They have SP-10 on the sides of them.

Go to the "search" option at the top of this page and type in, dual carb setup. Lots of good info. Especially relating to the linkage aspect of the system.
Good luck

Awesome. Thank you sir. I’m searching now for upgraded linkage. The current setup looks pretty tired. I’ll check it out. Thank you kindly.
